Transforming New Ulm into a city of white and changing the appearance of the entire county in a few hours time, a snow storm which started with advance showers of sleet Friday afternoon, continued during the night Friday and Saturday.

A city which only a day ago lay awaiting the first touch of spring, awoke Saturday morning to find itself in the clutches of Old Man Winter who had visited almost the entire state. Weather observers state that the storm was the worst that had visited Minnesota this winter. The snowfall is of great value to the farmer, however, and the white covering on the fields will give moisture and the winter grains will benefit.

Snow Is Valuable To Farmers

Farmers state that the snow storm is sure to act against future dry spells and the blanket of snow which now covers the farm lands is of great value due to the fact that it is better to have snow on the fields than it is to have them bare as has been the case in the past few months. The reason for this is that the present season is the time of freezing and thawing. When the ground is bare and freezes or thaws suddenly, an upheaval in the earth occurs resulting disastrously to the winter wheat, alfalfa and clover. The blanket of snow protects these for the farmers. Because there has not been much moisture this winter, the present snow is a decided asset to farmers in this vicinity.

Four Inches Of Snow Fall

Four inches of snow fell Friday night and Saturday, according to weather observer Alex Henle. Altho the high winds swept the snow around the city with all the appearance of a blizzard the thermometer registered 15 degrees above zero Saturday morning altho it go colder toward night.

Sunday morning it was two degrees above and Monday morning it was 2 below. The high temperature resulted in an increasing slushiness and sloppiness. Almost a half an inch of precipitation is recorded. The sun came out in all his regal glory Monday and Tuesday and the snow is melting away fast. A few more days like the ones just passed and all of the snow will be gone.

State Department

Opens Highways

Reports from the state highway department state that the snow blockaded highways in Minnesota were attacked Monday by an army of 2,500 men; 100 plows and scrapers and by night half of the 7,000 miles of trunk highways were open for travel. "the army" was called into action by the State highway department after an investigation revealed from six to twelve inches of snow packed into drifts ranging from four to six feet high. From nearly all parts of the state came reports Monday of clear cold weather, blockaded roadways, high drifts and delayed traffic.

Buses Delayed for Two days

New Ulm was without bus service from Saturday morning until Monday night. The Northland Bus Company running from Minneapolis to Tracy sent out their first bus from Minneapolis Monday afternoon. The Monte State Line bus went thru Saturday morning but was unable to continue according to schedule until Tuesday morning. Train service on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad was not delayed all of the trains arriving in New Ulm on schedule time. There was no snow west of Huron so the main line thru New Ulm was not affected by the storm. Trains over the Minneapolis & St. Louis railroad ran on time and were not delayed anywhere.
