The elegant new parochial school building, erected by the members of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran congregation at Sleepy Eye, during the past season, and which was completed shortly before Christmas, will be formally dedicated with appropriate ceremonies, next Sunday, January 10. There will be morning and evening services.

German and English

The morning services will begin at 10:30 o’clock, with brief dedicatory ceremonies at the new school house where Rev. W. C. Albrecht, pastor of the congregation, will officiate. There upon, the gathering will proceed to the church edifice and Rev. John Plocher of St. Paul, vice president of the Minnesota district of the Lutheran Joint Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota and other states, will deliver a German Sermon.

During the noon hour, the ladies of the congregation will serve dinner in the church basement and then afternoon will serve dinner in the church basement, and the afternoon will be devoted to a public inspection of the imposing new school building and social gatherings.

At 7:30 o’clock in the evening, special English services will be conducted at the church, commemorative of the school dedication. The sermon will be preached by Rev. William F. Sauer of Watertown, S. D., president of the Dakota-Montana district of the Joint synod.

Invitations have been extended to the Lutheran congregations of New Ulm, Springfield, Essig, Eden and Morgan to attend the dedication Sunday.

Cost Over $20,000

The beautiful new structure cost in excess of $20,000 exclusive of the equipment, which will add approximately $1,500 to the total sum expended. The completion of the new school building comes as a fitting climax to the first half century of the congregation’s existence, and it is planned to observe the golden jubilee, some time this year. Nearly $14,000 of the cost of the structure is already paid, and the balance to covered by subscriptions, which are to the liquidated within the next 18 months. This is indeed a very creditable showing for the church members.

The new school house is substantially built of brick. It consists of one story and a very high basement, well lighted and cozy. The main floor is divided into two large school rooms, and one spacious lecture room. The basement has two commodious play rooms for the boys and girls who attend the school, as well as toilet and storage rooms. One of the ideal features of the new building is that it is heated by steam from the central heating system, thus eliminating the many disagreeable things connected with ordinary heating installations.

Beautiful Window

Above the main entrance there is a beautiful large art glass window, depicting Jesus blessing little children, by the famous artist Heinrich Hofmann. This is a donation from the young people of the congregation, and adds greatly to the general attractiveness of the new building. Several young men of the church presented two artistic ornamental lanterns, electrically lighted, which have been placed a either side of the main entrance.

St. John’s Lutheran parochial school of Sleepy Eye is attended by 76 pupils. There are two teachers, Alfred Goeglein and Miss Esther Buenger, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Albrecht, who has charge of the religious instruction.
