New Ulm is going to have a swimming pool. It is not a question of future years but it is planned to have it in operation by July 1 of this year. This was decided at a meeting of the executive committee of the American Legion held at the office of Attorney T. O. Streissguth Monday evening, where they met and discussed the swimming pool proposition with Wesley Bintz, a structural engineer from Lansing, Mich., who has built and planned many of the finest pools in the country during the past five or six years.
Ratified By Legion Members
Tuesday evening the matter was brought up before the rank and file of the American Legion at their monthly meeting and was passed without a dissenting vote and ere the meeting adjourned seventeen of the members present had subscribed over $2000 towards the proposed pool. The pool as planned by the legion boys will cost approximately $20,000 after it has been equipped and will provide space for a capacity crowd of 1500 people. The pool in question is termed an open air raised pool, a view of which is shown elsewhere in this paper.
Dimensions of Pool
Although no definite plans have been adopted or accepted the pool which the legion boys have in mind has an outside dimension of 94×152 feet, pool proper 65×100 feet, a superficial water area of 5611 square feet and the capacity of the pool is over 133,000 gallons of water. It has a fully reinforced concrete floor with porous sub drainage layer and complete drainage system underneath same and water tight expansion joints. The depth of the pool varies from 3 feet 9 inches which is the depth over 77 per cent of the pool to 9 feet which is the deep diving part. The pool is 77 per cent wad-able and 100 per cent swimmable.
Concourse Around Pool
The pool wall is reinforced with 3-4 inch steel 3 inch centers with height of 12 feet and carried 3 feet below all floors to prevent frost action. A real scum gutter is also built under the pool. A concourse floor or walk is built around the entire pool and is 14 feet 6 inches wide composed of all concrete and steel construction with area of 5781 square feet and supported by proper columns and footings,. The pool wall, floor and concourse floor are all built waterproof so that no water can drain through into the bath house below. All outside concrete faces are rubbed with carborundum stone to present smooth surfaces. A 1 1-2 inch pipe handrail is built around the entire pool and 8depth signs mark the different depths of water in the pool.
The pool itself with contain 8 1 1-2 inch pipe ladders, Bintz 11-board High-Dive, Bintz adjustable spring-board, railing 3 feet high around entire outside edge of pool so that the spectators cannot fall in or mix with the bathers. Fifteen 200-watt 16 inch white ball globes will light up the pool and a fountain with electrical connection will be built in the center.
Spacious Bath Rooms
The space underneath the concourse will be utilized as a bath room and will have an area of 4935 square feet. This will be arranged and laid out for installation of waiting room with counter, shelving, waiting benches, ticket office, rails, first aid room, attendant’s room, 523 steel lockers for men and women, 20 private changing rooms for the women with attendant showers, 16 showers, 13 floor drains,15 plumbing fixtures in men’s and women’s toilet rooms and equipment room of over 400 square feet area. The room is equivalent to a building 30 x 175 feet with a reinforced concrete floor fully sub drained with porous layer and drainage system, four stair-ways for men and women, bathers and public, sanitary facilities for men and women with all service, waste and vent lines, 4000 gallon reinforced concrete equilibrium pit used in Bintz special recirculating system, scum gutter, sub drainage and sanitary system.
A concrete entrance walk of 500 sq. feet will be built around the pool and a complete electrical system with 82 lights ranging from 60 watt to 200 watt light up the interior.
Filtration Equipment
The filtration equipment of the pool comprises two 72-inch vertical filters with 10,000 gallons per hour capacity at 3 gallon rate, pump and motor for delivering water at fountain at a pressure of 15 pounds, coagulant pot, with all interconnecting piping, valves, pressure gauges, pit cocks, etc., for same. Sterilization equipment for sterilizing the water in connection with the filtration equipment will also be installed which keeps the water up to drinking standards at all times.
The outside wall of the bath house can be built either of face brick, cobble stone or wood. This is up to the party building it and the various kinds of work naturally represent differences in cost. The picture shown in this issue shows a bath house similar to the one planned by the legion, the outside wall in this case being built of cobblestone.
Legion committees are now at work making preparations for a drive to obtain the necessary funds and according to plans previously devised the legion plans on selling $50 bonds which will draw interest at 5 per cent and which are payable any time within twelve years, payments to be made by lot, one twelfth of the bonds to be paid each year. The enthusiasm shown by the boys at the recent meetings signify that the thing will go across with a bang and the general public will no doubt hear considerably more about the plan in the next few weeks.
