An unusual freak of nature-a three-legged chicken, fully matured-will be one of the interesting features at the ninth annual show of the Brown County Poultry association, to be held at the New Ulm Armory,Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 7, 8, 9 and 10. This freak bird was raised by Joseph Earl, well-known Sleepy Eye resident, who has agreed to exhibit it at the big exhibition here next month.
1,500 Bird Show
Secretary H. F. Raabe of this city is daily receiving many requests for premium lists, not only from breeders in this section of the state, but also from fanciers residing at considerable distance. If weather conditions are favorable, all indications point to a 1,500 bird show. As competition is open to the world, and the New Ulm shows have always proven to be Minnesota’s banner exhibitions, some of the best specimens of feathered aristocrats in the country will be entered here, next month.
15 Silver Cups
As previously stated in the Journal, a total of 15 beautiful silver cups will be given away absolutely as special prizes during the big exhibition at the Armory. Ten of these handsome trophies were donated by New Ulm banks, professional men, and business firms, while the silver cup, donated by the First National bank of Sleepy Eye, some years ago, for the highest scoring pen, will be definitely and finally awarded at the exhibition here next month. In addition thereto, the Poultry association has purchased four beautiful silver cups, to be warded outright for the best display in the American, Asiatic, English and Mediterranean classes, respectively.
Cash Premiums Increased
In keeping with its policy to pay prize-winning exhibitors as much money as possible, the cash premium awards have again been increased this year, by the association. As a result, this show will pay the highest cash prizes of any similar exhibition in the state. This feature will no doubt prove an added incentive to breeders and fanciers, to ship their best birds here, next month.
$2.50 Sweepstakes
For the best solid-colored cock, solid-colored hen, solid-colored cockerel, solid-colored pullet, parti-colored cock, parti-colored hen, parti-colored cockerel and pari-colored pullet of the show, a sweep-stakes prize of $2.50 each will be paid by the association.
A special cash prize of $5.00 will be paid to the exhibitor sending 10 or more birds (one or more varieties) the greatest distance.
Red-headed Contest
H. F. Raabe, well known local breeder of fancy Single Comb Rhode Island Reds, will donate $5.00 in gold to the lady (girl or woman), whose hair most closely matches the color of the first prize Single Comb Rhode Island Red pullet at the show. Those desiring to enter this contest, which is open to everybody, should present themselves at the secretary’s office at the Armory, Saturday evening, January 9, at 8 o’clock.
