Boys’ and Girls’ Teams Defeat Gaylord Cagers, Last Thursday Evening. Former Contest Was Close and Exciting Throughout, While the Preliminaries Proved a Sweeping Victory for the New Ulm Sextet. Alumni Game, January 2.
——–
Last Thursday evening, both Coach Stover’s and Coach Fritsche’s Lavender and White cagers defeated the respective Gaylord teams at that place, by scores of 24-22 and 33-9, respectively.
The boys’ contest was a hard-fought battle. Spectators were kept on edge a the time during the fray. Many spectacular shots were made; Gaylord, especially, attempting; numerous long shots, as they did in last year’s district tournament, when they won the championship. In view of the fact that Gaylord is a strong contender for district honors again this year, having two prominent members of the speedy 1924 squad, New Ulm showed her strength by defeating the fast five.
The work of both quints was speedy and “heady.” The first quarter ended in a tie, 5-5, and at the close of the first half, Gaylord held the advantage in a 12-11 score. The count at the end of the hard-fought game stood 24-22 in favor of New Ulm.
Arbes, this year’s football captain of New Ulm high school, was in the lineup during the tilt with Gaylord, last Thursday evening, and netted several goals, adding greatly to our team’s general strength. Hamann and Esser played at the guard positions, Bentzin at forward, and Blauert at center. They all did excellent work.
The regular sextet lineup played the first half of the girls’ game with Gaylord, and scored 14 points before their opponents made a single count. At the end of the first half, the tally stood 18-3 in favor of New Ulm, and the Gaylord team was unable to over-come this big lead. At the close of the fray, New Ulm had piled up 33 points, as against 9 for their opponents.
Edna Pollei scored 24 of our total count. Hildegard Amann also did fine work, both girls playing through the entire game. During the second half, Coach Miss Louise Fritsche gave all of her substitutes an opportunity to show their mettle, and the entire squad gave a very creditable account of itself.
This was the Gaylord girls’ first game, which accounts for the sweeping victory of New Ulm, to some extent at least. In spite of the great handicap, which they were unable to overcome, the Gaylord sextet was not disheartened, but fought valiantly, although in vain, to boost their score. With more experience, they
