New Ulm merchants began to create the Christmas spirit during the past week when artistically trimmed windows and stores decorated with holly, evergreen boughs and other Christmas decorations and filled with Christmas gifts fairly shouted the coming of Christmas. And to add to it all main street presented a gala effect such as never was seen in Minnesota before. One hundred and fifty ten-foot Christmas trees placed one in front of each business house and lighted up with red, blue, green and white lights gave Minnesota Street the genuine atmosphere of Christmas.
Beautiful Night Effect
The trees which were put up on Tuesday and lighted for the first time that evening presented a beautiful sight and persons looking up and down the streets could not help admiring the wondrous effect which it gave. The coming of Christmas was fully brought home to the many people who saw the display and many of them realized that the gift-giving day is only three weeks away.
Local Man’s Idea
The idea of having Christmas trees placed in the flagstaff holes in front of the business places was brought forth by Athailas Henle. The conversation in which he made the remark was overheard by several of the business men who took the matter up at a meeting with the result that it became a reality. The trees were shipped in and installed by the Pioneer Nursery Company of this city while the Ulrich Electric Co. and the Everling Electric Co. made and installed the lighting fixtures.
