Almost 170 Members Attend
Annual Event Held At Turner Hall.
--------
Wednesday evening the New Ulm Turnverein and the Turner Frauenverein celebrated jointly the anniversary of the founding of these societies. The former celebrated its 69th Stiftungsfest and the latter its 36th. Only members of these societies sat down at the festive board. The attendance was better than usual, nearly 170 being present. The eats were very fine and a program of unusual merit was given. After the program there was a dance.
Attractive Table Decorations
Special efforts were made in the table decorations, orange and blue being used for the color scheme. At each plate there was a beautiful, large chrysanthemum. The tables were ranged in an octagon. In the center of the open space the tables were arranged so that they represented the letter "T". On this center table there was a beautiful basket filled with flowers. Guy Crane acted as toastmaster. This was his first offense and he acquitted himself in a very creditable manner.
Musical Numbers
Music numbers were furnished by Delbert Oswald, saxophone solo, Mrs. Herman Hein, piano accompanist and Miss Dorothy Hein, violin solo, with Mrs. Hein, as accompanist. Both of these numbers were so well received that encores were demanded and given. The treat of the evening in the musical line without question was the singing of four year old Charlotte Paulson, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Krause. She sang three songs in a clear strong voice, naturally and without affectation. Herman Hein, assisted by the banqueters, sang a humorous song. There was also community singing under direction of Fred Pfaender. Major Albert Pfaender delighted the audience with a recitation in German dialect.
$800 Donated
Miss Elfrieda Toberer, as President of the Ladies'Auxiliary, spoke briefly of the achievements of the ladies during the past year. The report was especially gratifying, because it showed that the ladies had accomplished more than in any previous year, all due as Miss Toberer said, to harmonious work. As proof of her assertions she turned over to the New Ulm Turnverein, a check for the sum of $800. This announcement was greeted with spontaneous applause. Kurt Bell president of the Turnverein, thanked the ladies for this magnanimous gift and then spoke briefly on the activities of the Turnverein. Miss Alice Haeberle took occasion to remind the member-ship of the good work done by the New Ulm Turnverein and called attention specially to the building activities of the society and stated that from small beginnings, the society now owned without a particle of indebtedness a splendid hall, a credit not only to the society but also to the city.
Turner Activities
Bezirks-sprecher Albert Steinhauser took occasion to review briefly the splendid work done by the American Turnerbund to which the local society belongs. In October the national organization had occasion to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its existence. Mr. Steinhauser cited the activities of the Turners in the abolition movement, their splendid services in the Civil War and their wonderful achievements in the physical training movement in this country. The membership has every reason to feel proud of the past achievements of the Turners, said the speaker. He also briefly called attention to the Jahn Fund which was created but a short time ago and he urged the members to do their share to raise $100,000, which has been set as the goal for the educational work of the Turnerbund.
Physical Training Demonstration
The outstanding number on the program was the physical training number produced on the stage by the members of the Zoeglingsverein. It was a demonstration of free exercises and the movements were gracefully and accurately carried out.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Voss of Echo, Minn. and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hose of Lemmon, S. D. were among the guests from outside who attended the banquet.
