Every Herd In County Will Be Give The Complete Tuberculosis Test.

Brown County is the 26th county in the state to go on the list asking for the area test. Ten of the twenty-six counties have already been tested, three of which have been accredited. An accredited county is one where the disease has been eliminated to less than one half of one per cent.
County Appropriation
The law provides that upon petition of fifty-one per cent of the cattle owners in a county, the county board is authorized to appropriate 25c per head of the cattle in the county to pay for making the tuberculin test. A complete testis made of every herd of cattle in the county. This first test is to locate the points of infection. Four months later the herds are tested where reactors were found the first time, and again four months later a test is made just where reactors were found the second time. Then finally a complete test is again made in the county.
At a meeting of the county commissioners on November 19, petitions signed by 59 per cent of the cattle owners of Brown County were presented to them asking for the area test of cattle for tuberculosis. Several farmers from various sections of the county were also present and told how the people in their locality felt about tuberculosis testing.
State Representative
Mr. W. A. Peck of St. Paul was also present representing the State Livestock Sanitary Board and he explained the matter very thoroughly at this meeting. After going over the matter in detail the board voted to enter a cooperative agreement with the State Livestock Sanitary Board and put on the test when there were sufficient funds provided by the state for indemnities and as has been the case so far after this last test they are put on the accredited list and the county is accredited for three years. The State Livestock Sanitary Board has complete charge of the testing and nothing but accredited veterinarians are employed.
Rid Herds Of Tuberculosis
It has been demonstrated that the only way tuberculosis can be controlled in livestock is by making the area test. If some farmers test and others do not test the disease will always be present. It is also a human health problem and Dr. Chas. Mayo states that there is a direct relationship between the bovine or cattle tuberculosis and human tuberculosis. It will probably be two years before the area test will be made in Brown County, all depending on what the next legislature does in the matter of appropriating for indemnities.
