Farmers Thru Threshing Are Now Busy With

Fall Plowing.

——–

Residents in New Ulm and the immediate vicinity welcomed the cooling showers of rain which fell early Saturday morning, relieving the oppression of the excessive heat of the past week. Drizzling rains continued thru Sunday and Monday and a total of two and one-fourth inches of rainfall was recorded. The present week has been cooler and the sun has struggled thru the dark clouds at intervals.

Moisture Needed.

Moisture was badly needed as gardens, lawns and fields in this vicinity were drying up. The heavy rains ended in June and during the month of Augusta total of only one and two-thirds inches of rain fell. The heavier rain fell August5 when Weather Observer Alex Henle reports .55 of an inch was recorded. The extremely hot days started last Wednesday when the thermometer registered 101 and was followed by a register of 103 degrees for Thursday. On Friday there was a drop of 1 degree and on Saturday the registration was 96 degrees. This record was taken following the rain in the early morning hours, which measured one half of an inch. On Saturday there was rain fall of 1.65 of an inch and on Sunday one tenth of an inch was recorded, making a total of two and one-fourth inches.

Hottest September In Years.

It has been the opinion of many old residents that the first week of September has been the hottest one for fifty years and this change in temperature has been welcomed. The nights have cooled and it is possible to sleep well now which is more than can be said for the previous week.

Showers Were General.

Long awaited showers visited North and South Dakota, part of this state, Iowa and Wisconsin after more than a month of aridity. High temperatures recorded elsewhere have brought deaths, drought damage and suffering.

Pastures Suffering.

However the rain which fell was not sufficient to materially benefit the pastures thruout the southern part of the state which have been badly scorched and dried up from the excessive heat. In numerous neighboring cities milk prices have been raised because of the shortage of pastures and butter has also taken a jump in price. Increase in the price of milk has not been made here.

Fall Plowing Done.

Farmers are getting their fields in fine shape for planting of winter grains or for early seeding next spring. A large amount of fall plowing thruout this have been disked and double disked.

Thrashing is almost complete in this section altho some stack threshing is in progress. Operations have gone on without interruption because of the hot weather.
