Two raiding parties, composed of Sheriff W. J. Julius, Deputy Sheriff William H. Gieseke, Chief of Police Alwin Harmening, Officer Ed. Wagner, J. B. Forster and Isidor Gleissner, swooped down upon the farms of Paul Gutknecht and Richard Raddatz in Linden township, Tuesday afternoon, and secured plenty of “evidence” to convict both men on charges of violating the prohibition statutes.
On the Gutknecht place, one still was found in full operation, while a similar contraption, located on the Raddatz farm, happened to be “resting” when the raiding party arrived. A total of six or seven gallons of moonshine, some 75 gallons of mash and lbetween 150 and 175 bottles of home ibrew beer were found on both farms.
Gutknechtand Raddatz were brought to New Ulm and taken before City Justice Fred. Pfaender, who bound them over to the Brown county district court under $500 bail, each, which was furnished. Both men served time in the Brown county jail in 1923, following their conviction in district court on charges of violating the prohibition laws.
