Continuation Of Play Would Mean Financial Loss To Club.

Monday afternoon the directors of the New Ulm Baseball Ass'n. decided to disband the team for the season and in accordance therewith have discharged all the players and are winding up the affairs of the club. The reason for the discontinuing of play was the poor showing made by the club and the failure of the directorate to see its way clear to continue the schedule and get an even break in the finances at the close of the season.

Have Money Left.

Altho the exact status of the treasury is not known at this time it is estimated that there will be approximately $250 and $300 in the treasury after all the small bills have been paid. This sum will be placed on certificates of deposit and left on interest until another team is started by the local fans. It will be a nice nest egg to start out with and the directorate felt that it would be better to have some funds left over for the future rather than to continue to play when there is little chance of winning the bunting in the Southern Minnesota League.

Agreements Broken.

The local directors feel that the baseball directors of other cities did not keep their promises made at the beginning of the season. At that time it was stated to the local club that the idea of the league was the development of local players. Sunday ball was to be played only and the salaries of the ball players were all set by the league. In-stead of sticking to this agreement the majority of the teams hired their players by the month and very few of them can truthfully say that they stayed within the salary limit as out-lined in the by-laws. It was a herculean task for the local management to secure competent players by the game for the salaries paid and as a consequence New Ulm found itself in the cellar from the start and was never able to climb out.

Starting the second half with a team that seemed formidable gave the directors a little hope but loose playing lost two games in succession and knowing that the crowds would dwindle if the team was not a winning one the officers felt that there would be no use of continuing play. After figuring out the cost of operating the team for the balance of the season it was calculated that the finances would run from $500to $600 behind and rather than run in the hole the decision to terminate the affairs of the club for this year was reached. A complete statement of the amounts taken in and expended will be published by the directors in a week or two and from it can be seen that the team was operated as economically as any team was ever run in this city. Fortune evidently did not smile on the New Ulm ball team this year and when the breaks of the game go against a team it is simply impossible to win.
