Realizing that something must be done to take care of the large overflow of students, the board of directors of the Dr. Martin Luther college, in session here, Tuesday, voted to recommend to the Ev. Lutheran Synod of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Other States, which owns the local institution, either the erection of an addition to the present boys’ dormitory, or to provide temporary portable buildings to house the young men students.
Rapid Growth.
Not only is the boys’ dormitory crowded to the limit, but the same condition also exists so far as the recitation building, music hall and other buildings on the college campus are concerned. The enrollment of Dr. Martin Luther college has increased from 72 in 1918 to 227 during the present term, and this rapid and substantial growth accounts for the cramped condition and the necessity for additional room.
Enlarge Chemical Laboratory.
The board of directors is planning to double the present size of the chemical laboratory at the college during the coming summer vacation. It is also planned to purchase a light motor truck to enable more expeditious hauling of supplies from the business section of New Ulm to the college grounds. For many years,a horse and wagon have been employed for this purpose, but of late this equipment has proved inadequate.
Repairs and Alterations.
The buildings comprising the college complex were thoroughly inspected by the board members, and needed alterations and repairs ordered to be made during the approaching vacation period.
Permanent Appointment.
The temporary appointment of Prof. Emil D. Backer of this city, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Prof. Fr. O. Reuter as director of the musical department of the college, was made permanent by unanimous vote of the board, and Prof. Backer has indicated his acceptance. Mrs. H. Goeglein, the efficient matron of the girls’ dormitory, was re-appointed.
Members Present.
Rev. Wm. F. Sauer of Watertown, S.D., chairman of the board of directors, presided at the session, Tuesday. Prof. H. Sitz of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran parochial school of this city is secretary. The other board members are: Rev. Gerhard Hinnenthal and F. H. Retzlaff, New Ulm; Rev. E.G. Fritz, Wellington; O. Stindt, Menomonie, Wis, and R. Robrke, Hoskins, Nebr.
