Don Brand, Journal staff writer, is among 83 winners in the 12th annual Minnesota School Bell Awards competitions, a program sponsored by the Minnesota Education Association to recognize outstanding performances in coverage of education.

Entries were judged by a panel headed by Dr. Robert Jones, director of the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Judges included members of his faculty and of the Minnesota Press Club's education committee.

Brand received a merit award for his column series "School Bell'', with columns submitted from Dec. 24, 26 and 29, 1972.

The judge's comments follow: "A well-organized and well-written series about music instruction in the New Ulm school system, the School Bell columns should be commended for blending information about instructional philosophies with the actual implementation of the program. And all this is done in easy-to-read and easy-to-understand language that is highly informative and interesting for all readers, but especially for parents who as taxpayers have a stake in the operation of the public schools."

Other area paper winners were the Redwood Falls Gazette for best education feature in non-daily newspapers, "Unlock the doors and light 'em up" by John Schneider; Mankato Free Press, a merit award for the feature "College enrollment woes bring changes" by Robert Girouard and Lynn Closway; the Mankato Free Press, a merit award for editorial, non-metropolitan daily.
