A Catholic call to conscience on immigration

To the editor: As Catholics within or from New Ulm, Sleepy Eye, and surrounding areas, we are deeply disturbed and saddened by current immigration enforcement actions taking place within our state and by the lack of a public response from our parish leaders. We are also disappointed by Representative Finstad’s refusal to acknowledge the harm being done to our immigrant communities or to express sympathy for Renee Good and her loved ones. With the U. S. Catholic bishops, we pray for an end to violence and the use of dehumanizing rhetoric within our country. With them we also ...

I know how he feels

To the editor: Poor Jerome Powell...he’s having that same old problem that seemingly pops up quarterly. The problem is the President is lobbying to get the Fed to lower interest rates in order to stimulate his sagging economy, while Powell is doing his sensitive job to keep the economy from going haywire. What does the petulant man-child occupying what’s left of the White House do? He pouts and kicks and screams. I wish he’d hold his breath — indefinitely. But he speeds through those behaviors in order to reach what he does best...he threatens to get rid of Powell simply ...

Trump’s distraction methods

To the editor: Trump is hoping everyone is distracted from his disastrous 2025 Budget Bill that the Congressional Budget Office estimated would add $3.4 trillion to federal deficits over the next decade leaving millions without health insurance. 11.8 million Americans will lose health coverage under Medicaid. Here are just two of his distraction methods. 1. The Greenland fantasy. The cost to purchase Greenland which Greenland, all of NATO, and the vast majority of Americans oppose is estimated to be a minimum of $700 billion dollars. Taking it by military force would result in the ...

Behold by wondrous beauty

To the editor: This is how mad men come to rule a country while the people stand idly by just watching. In the recent book titled “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump”: subtitled “37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President” we are given a detailed analysis of Donald Trump’s mental health. In the book, contributor Ian Hughes describes the toxic triangle of destructive leaders, susceptible followers and a conducive environment that allows these madmen to flourish. He describes how these crazed leaders lack any empathy for others while viewing them as mere ...

Not much difference between Noem and Himmler

To the editor: I do not see much difference between Kristi Noem’s ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and Heinrich Himmler’s SS (Sicherheitsdienst). They both operate in a murky gray area without any legal supervision. The SS determined who was German. ICE determines who is American. The main tool of both is fear. People who might object to violence by the SS or ICE hesitate to act because of fear. Complaints receive no government traction. Bullets to the head dissuade protest. Both Noem and Himmler are zealous advocates of charismatic leaders (Donald Trump and Adolph ...

Good turnout for town hall meetings

To the Editor: I’d like to thank the residents of Brown and Redwood counties for attending the recent town meetings Senator Dahms and I held recently. We saw good turnout at all our stops, and it was clear the Number 1 topic on people’s mind was fraud in the State of Minnesota. I share these frustrations and residents should know I am working to put an end to it, and to ensure that those who allowed fraud to flourish are finally held accountable. We also heard concerns from business owners and employees about the state’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave program. The program ...
