Police: Gunman shooting at police

officers in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Authorities say several Philadelphia police officers have been shot in an “active and ongoing” shooting situation in the city.

Sgt. Eric Gripp tweeted there was at least one suspect firing at police officers Wednesday afternoon.

A police spokesman confirmed the shooting in the Nicetown section of the city.

Temple University tweeted that it has locked down its Health Sciences Center Campus.

Video shows a massive police presence with dozens of police cars and officers, many of them with guns drawn.

One officer appeared injured and was taken away in a police car. Video also showed two other officers carrying a man and putting them in the back of a car.

It’s unknown if any officers have been shot.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says numerous agents are responding to the scene to assist Philadelphia police.

Government delays border

barrier construction in Arizona

PHOENIX (AP) — The federal government is delaying construction on parts of the border fence in Arizona because it’s still working on design plans.

Attorneys said in a court filing late Tuesday that plans to replace waist-high barriers this month with taller fencing in a wildlife refuge, national monument and conservation area are being delayed until October.

Authorities plan on using Defense Department funds under President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration.

The Center for Biological Diversity last week asked a federal judge to halt work on 68 miles (109 kilometers) of border wall, saying the government unlawfully waived dozens of laws. Environmentalists say the new barriers will damage wildlife habitat.

The government says the replacement fencing is crucial to national security.

It will proceed with construction on a two-mile stretch near an official border crossing beginning next week.
