NEW ULM — The New Ulm Eagles boys hockey team scored six goals in the second period Saturday, turning a 2-1 lead into an 8-1 advantage and finishing with a 9-1 win over Hutchinson at the New Ulm Civic Center in a nonconference game.

Sophomore Carsten Haala recorded a hat trick, with freshman Bobby Rewitzer and junior Hunter Larson each adding two goals. Carson Uecker, a junior and Brody Nordby each scored a goal.

Larson and Nordby each had four assists in the game.

Eagles goaltender Colton Anderson stopped 18 of 19 Tigers shot on goal as the Eagles fired 38 shots on Hutchinson netminder Weston Borstad.

“Before the game we tweaked some things on our lines and as the game went on things got better and better as the game went on,” New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman said as his team won their third straight game to improve to 3-1 on the season. “We moved some guys around to just try some things — we have a lot of speed and wanted to mix it up and see who works well together. And it worked out well today.”

The Eagles scored six goals in the second period to run away with a 9-1 victory. Nordby also scored a goal in the victory.

The Eagles, who host Marshall Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in a Big South Conference game, took a fast 2-0 lead just over a minute into the game when Haala got the first of his three goals just 15 seconds after the puck drop, with Larson and Nordby getting helpers.

Just over a minute later, Uecker made it 2-0 with assists to Jaxon Saenz and Trevan Thordson.

Hutchinson cut the lead to 2-1 on a power-play goal with just over four minutes left in the first period.

But any momentum that the Tigers thought they had with that late first-period goal went away fast in the second period as New Ulm scored six goals in a span of 11 minutes.

Haala made it 3-1 at the 3:59 mark before Rewitzer got his first varsity goal seven minutes later for a 4-1 lead. Thirty-four seconds later, Rewitzer collected his second goal for a 5-1 lead.

Haala’s hat-trick score at the 12:10 mark had New Ulm ahead 6-1 before Nordby and Larson scored goals for an 8-1 lead after two periods.

“We scored them in a short amount of time,” Neuman said. “The goals happened quick — our guys were in the right spots — and they are hungry around the net.”

And there was some youth served too with scores from Haala and Rewitzer.

“Our players are talented and young,” Neuman said.

Larson put the final nail in the game just over a minute into the third period with his second goal of the game for a 9-1 win.

And after the Eagles’ first two games of the season going overtime (1-1 in those games), New Ulm has put up nine goals in each of their last two games and outscored opponents 18-1.

“The overtime loss to Waseca we were happy with the effort to battle back because we were down,” Neuman said. “And the overtime win against Minnesota River we did not play our best first two periods but we picked it up in the third period so late in the season, we need to win those close games. So if we can do that early in the season it only gets easier as the season goes on. And Marshall (on Tuesday) is always a big game for our conference and section.”
