Saturday area roundup: Castleman leads Silver to semifinals

New Ulm 10, Hutchinson 2

SLEEPY EYE — Behind a pair of triples from Owen Castleman, the top-seeded New Ulm VFW Silver cruised to a 10-2 win over Hutchinson in a District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament game Saturday at Sleepy Eye Ballpark.

Castleman finished 2 for 4, with his triples leading to six RBIs, while Colin McAlpine was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kaden Stueber was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Castleman’s first triple of the game came in the second inning with the bases loaded to make it 3-0, while Stueber’s double soon after made it a 4-0 lead. Hutchinson got two runs back in the third, but Silver broke things open with a five-run fifth inning led by Castleman’s second bases-loaded triple of the game to make it 9-2. Silver added another run in the sixth to salt the game away.

Ryler Collins pitched the complete game for Silver in the win, allowing four hits and two walks for two unearned runs while striking out eight.

Trayton Kottke took the loss for Hutchinson in 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs, four earned, on seven hits and four walks.

Silver plays Marshall VFW Orange in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Sunday in Sleepy Eye, with the winner moving on to Monday’s finals. The loser of that semifinals game will get another chance to make the finals Monday by winning the elimination bracket finals game, which takes place at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Mankato American 7, Sleepy Eye 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye VFW was held scoreless for the second day in a row as Mankato American earned a 7-0 win in a District 2 VFW Baseball Tournament elimination bracket game at Sleepy Eye Ballpark to end Sleepy Eye’s season at 7-8-1.

Mankato American moved on in the elimination bracket with the win and will play Hutchinson at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Sleepy Eye. The winner of American-Hutchinson will play the loser of the 11 a.m. Sunday New Ulm VFW Silver-Marshall VFW Orange semifinals game at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Sleepy Eye was held to four hits in the loss, singles by Adam Braulick, Derek Wales, Caleb Oscarson and Hayden Domeier. Wales took the pitching loss in six innings, allowing eight hits and two walks for seven earned runs while striking out six.

American’s Brenden Blaschko got the complete-game win, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out eight. He also had two hits, along with Maddox Hunecke and Isaac Mangulis.

LEGION BASEBALL

Wabasso 6, Springfield 2

TRUMAN — Wabasso stayed alive in the Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday with a 6-2 win over Springfield in a Sub-State elimination game.

The win moves Wabasso on to the elimination bracket semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday, where it will take on St. James back in Truman. The winner will play the loser of the winners bracket finals game between Sleepy Eye and Luverne at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Jack Burns led Wabasso at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Cason Olson was 1 for 2 with a double and Noah Anderson was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Drew Kemp also was 1 for 3 with two walks for Wabasso, while Jayden Remiger was 1 for 3 with a walk and team-high two runs scored.

Burns also got the complete-game pitching win, allowing six hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out three.

Brayden Trapp was 2 for 3 with a double to lead Springfield, while Eli Heglund was 2 for 3 and Leo Hovland doubled. Ely Streich also had a hit and an RBI for Springfield, while Thomas Beers had an RBI.

Streich took the mound loss in two innings of relief, allowing two hits and a walk for three runs, two earned, while striking out one. Madden Lendt got the start on the mound for Springfield and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing no hits and two walks while striking out five.

The game was tied at 2-all until the fifth inning when Wabasso went ahead for good thanks to a three-run inning that was highlighted by a two-out, two-run single from Burns to put Wabasso up 4-2.
