Jensen to continue college baseball journey at Century

NEW ULM — After a year at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, New Ulm’s Ayden Jensen has decided to transfer to Century College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.

“Ellsworth was just not a good fit for me,” Jensen said. “I looked over schools and decided that Century was the best place for me. I did not get a whole lot of playing time [in Ellsworth] and that played in my decision to transfer. Again it was more playing time and the baseball program at Century is top-notch and they have made it to the [NJCAA DIII] tournaments for many years.”

Jensen said that when he talked to Century head baseball coach Matt Erzar about his interest in transferring to Century, Erzar said that he wanted Jensen as a hitter, catcher and outfielder.

“I am totally OK with that,” said Jensen, who was primarily a catcher at New Ulm High School. “I am going to see what is going to happen.”

Jensen said that not seeing a lot of playing time last year at Ellsworth was hard.

“Especially when you enjoy the game so much, but it was good to learn from the catcher that was ahead of me about what college baseball is like — it was a little hard at times,” he said.

Jensen said that he would prefer catching but is open to playing outfield at Century.

“I am totally OK with going to the outfield,” said Jensen, who is catching this amateur baseball season with the New Ulm Brewers.

Erzar said that he sees Jensen “behind the dish for us, but he has a chance to get in the outfield too. That is what we are looking for him to do for us.”

Erzar, who said he saw Jensen play summer baseball for HTP Sports Academy, said that he was impressed by Jensen’s athleticism, arm strength and ability to move.

“Catching is his spot, but I like to run a smaller roster for college in general because we are a Junior College,” Erzar said. “But also everyone of my catchers can play another position. I have a whole new lineup from a National runners-up team — I have three guys who are returning bats and everyone else is new.”

Jensen has just one year of baseball eligibility left at Century after using one year at Ellsworth, but he hopes to play baseball after this season at a four-year college.

Starting at $4.50/week.
