Price rebounds, leads SEU girls in Tomahawk-Valley second leg

BOYS LEG 2 RECAP

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral senior Owen Strei, the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Boys Golf Tournament leader through the first two legs, couldn’t have asked for a better start to his Monday at the Sleepy Eye Golf Club.

After a straight shot onto the fairway on Hole 1, he chipped his next shot onto the green and into the hole for an eagle. Strei was steady through his next eight holes, carrying a 2-under-par score into his final nine.

He finished the day with a 2-over-par 74, giving him another top finish in the tournament after medaling the first leg in Sherburn on April 21.

The Sleepy Eye United boys, however, were the most consistent team again for the second leg in a row after finishing first in Sherburn. On Monday, SEU led the way with a team-high score of 314, 34 shots under New Ulm Cathedral, which turned in a team score of 348. Finishing third on the day as a team was Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Lutheran (360), while Springfield took fourth (363) and Cedar Mountain and Alden-Conger tied for fifth (366). Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took seventh (369), while Madelia took eighth (372), Martin County West took ninth (390) and Wabasso took 10th (438). Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart was incomplete.

Finishing second behind Strei on Monday was GHEC/T/ML’s Landon Zimmer, who shot a 76. SEU’s Anders Coulson shot a 77 along with teammate Nolan Kucera to tie for third, while SEU’s Blaine Arneson and Josh Sellner both shot an 80 along with Springfield’s Braiden Davis to tie for fifth. MCW’s Knox Larson turned in an 81 for eighth, while Cedar Mountain’s Blake Schueller carded an 82 for ninth and teammate Carson Schiller shot an 83 for 10th. GHEC/T/ML’s Gavin Kester shot an 84 for 11th, while SEU’s Isaac Christensen and Alden-Conger’s Ryan Hintz shot 85s to tie for 12th. GFW’s Cole Jacobson and SEU’s George Schwint rounded out the top 15 scores on Monday with 87s to tie for 14th.

After two legs of tournament point totals, Strei leads the way individually with 60 points, followed by Arneson (52), Zimmer (51.5), Schueller (51), Kester (48), Larson (48), Coulson (48) and Kucera (46). Christensen, Schiller and Davis are tied for ninth in points with 43.5.

As a team, SEU has 20 tournament points. GHEC/T/ML (17), Cathedral (17), Springfield (14) and Alden-Conger (11.5) round out the top five teams.

The final leg of the tournament begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. James Golf Course, with tournament points being worth double.

GIRLS LEG 2 RECAP

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye United junior Sam Price may have wanted a re-do on the sixth hole of her first nine Monday, but she was quick to put that in the back of her mind and move on to finish first again on Leg 2 of the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Girls Golf Tournament at the Springfield Golf Course.

Price, who finished as the co-girls medalist on April 21 with Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann, shook off a tough eight strokes on the par-3 sixth hole to finish with an 87 on Monday. Price’s recovery on her final nine holes saw her sink two birdies to finish as the girls medalist and lead her team to another first-place finish. The SEU girls dominated the first leg of the tournament at Oakview Golf Course on April 21 and they took control again on Monday in Springfield with a score of 371.

Springfield finished second as a team on Monday with a (406), while Alden-Conger took third (431) and Cedar Mountain came in fourth (450). Madelia ended up in fifth Monday with a 451, while New Ulm Cathedral took sixth (456), Martin County West (457) took seventh, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop finished eighth (470), Wabasso finished ninth (475) and Granada-Huntley-Easy Chain/Truman/Martin Luther ended up 10th (505). Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart was incomplete.

Winkelmann had a solid second leg of the tournament also on her home course Monday as she ended up shooting a 93 to tie for third with BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht. Taking second behind Price was fellow junior teammate Kiara Murphy, who shot a 92.

SEU’s Ella Pollard carded a 95 for fifth, while Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner shot a 97 along with SEU’s Chloe Walter to tie for sixth. Madelia senior Katherine DeVlaeminck shot a 98 to take eighth on the day, while Alden-Conger’s Courtney Bakkedahl shot a 99 for ninth and Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky shot a 101 for 10th. Rounding out the top 15 Monday were New Ulm Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann (103, 11th), MCW’s Brenna Heifner (104, 12th) and Wabasso’s Alexis Jensen, GFW’s Anika Lee and Cathedral’s Elissa Ries, who all carded 105s to tie for 13th.

As for the overall point standings, Price leads the way with 59.5 tournament points, ahead of Winkelmann (57), Pollard (53.5), Murphy (53), Walter (50.5), Ahlbrecht (50), Bakkedahl (47), DeVlaeminck (45.5), Lee (44.5) and Lipetzky (42).

As a team, SEU leads with 20 tournament points. Springfield (18), Alden-Conger (16), Madelia (11) and MCW (10) round out the top five girls teams in tournament points.

The final leg is scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m. Monday at the Farmer’s Golf & Health Club in Sanborn.
