DII SW Sub-State roundup: Sleepy Eye 1 win away from repeat state appearance
Sleepy Eye 7, Luverne 3
LUVERNE — Sleepy Eye Post 7 stormed back to take down the home team Luverne 7-3 on Saturday evening in the semifinals of the DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament.
The win moves Sleepy Eye just one win away from returning to state for the second year in a row. Sleepy Eye will play in the championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday in Luverne, with a winner-take-all second game being played following that game if Sleepy Eye is defeated in the 11 a.m. game.
Down 3-1, Sleepy Eye jumped in front with a three-run sixth inning before adding three more in the seventh to help put things away.
Brandon Schmitz was back on the mound for Post 7 after suffering an injury in the first game of the tournament and pitched a complete game. He allowed seven hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out six. Caden Evers led the way at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Winsten Nienhaus was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Mark Anderson had two RBIs.
St. James 2, Wabasso 1
LUVERNE — St. James ended Wabasso’s season Saturday with a 2-1 win in a DII Southwest Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament elimination game.
Skoblik struck out four in all seven innings on the mound for Wabasso in the loss. Kaysen Harms was 2 for 4 with a run scored to lead Wabasso at the plate, while Jaxson Wagner, Jayden Remiger, Noah Anderson, Jack Burns and Caden Frericks each had a hit.
