New Ulm boys open season with 4-1 win over Marshall

NEW ULM — Throw in two power-play goals, a goal on a delayed penalty and an even-stength goal and you described New Ulm’s 4-1 win over Marshall Thursday night in a Big South Conference boys hockey game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Kaden Larson, Austin Uecker, Taylor Hansen and Ian Brudelie scored goals for New Ulm (1-0).

Uecker and Jack Albrecht each had two assists, with Ben Hohensee, Larson and Brody Wenner adding helpers.

Bryer Hoffmann stopped 28 of 29 Marshall shots.

“This was Marshall’s (0-4) fourth game, so their legs were under them,” New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman said. “(But) we got those power-play goals and it was a nice win for our guys.”

The Eagles, who will go for their 46th straight Big South Conference win Friday at Worthington, took a 1-0 lead on Larson’s power-play goal at the 4:52 mark of the first period before making it a 2-1 game on a goal from Uecker on a delayed penalty on the Tigers at the 14:27 mark of the second period.

The Eagles then added a Hansen power-play goal and an even-strength goal from Brudelie in the third period to put a ribbon on the win.

“Our biggest concern coming in was that they had already played games and it was our opening game,” Neuman said. “Game speed is different from practice. Our power play was good — we had watched film from Marshall’s game with Luverne and saw that Luverne scored four power-play goals on them, so we knew that we would have some chances on the power play to put some pucks in the net. We had two tips on redirect shots from the point.”
