Area roundup: Indians open season with big win over Clippers

Sleepy Eye 71, Cleveland 21

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye Indians opened their 2022-23 girls basketball season with a dominant 71-21 win over Cleveland Friday night at the Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Tip-Off at St. Mary’s High School.

Kadence Hesse led the Indians with 24 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Brea Mertz had a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double. Paige Haala also had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals for Sleepy Eye, while Cadence Okerman had four steals.

Cleveland was led by Kaylee Karels’ 13 points.

The Indians take on BOLD next in the Tip-Off at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s High School.

BOLD 80, St. Mary’s 40

SLEEPY EYE — BOLD cruised to an 80-40 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday night in the Knights’ season- and home-opening girls basketball Tip-Off.

The Knights were led by Morgan Mathiowetz’s 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Natalie Fischer added 10 points and Allie Labat had 8 points and two steals.

BOLD was led by Lainey Braulick’s 30 points, while Mari Ryberg had 16 points and Layla Pfarr had 14.

The Knights take on Cleveland at 1 p.m. Saturday as the Tip-Off resumes.
