NEW ULM — Tri-City United scored two touchdowns less than four minutes apart in the fourth quarter to break open a tight 14-7 game and went in to down the New Ulm Eagles 29-13 Friday night in a South Central District game.

Henry Schendel and Carter O’Malley each scored two touchdowns for TCU.

Marqavion Haefner and Ty Frederick scored touchdowns for the Eagles. Haefner scored on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Ayden Jensen in the second quarter, with Frederick’s coming on a 45-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

“It was a battle,” New Ulm head coach Derek Lieser said. “We knew TCU was a well-coached team and had a lot of returning players. I was proud of the effort. We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times, but you have to take your hats off to TCU — they were the more physical team.”

The story of the game perhaps came late in the third quarter, with the Titans holding a 14-7 lead.

New Ulm faced a fourth-and-2 on the TCU 21-yard line.

Jensen dropped back to pass and was intercepted by TCU’s Luke Holicky.

Starting on their own 20-yard line, TCU began a march that started late in the third quarter that went 80 yards on 16 plays and ended when — on fourth-and-goal from New Ulm’s 11-yard line, Schendel raced into the end zone for a 22-7 lead.

On the Eagles’ next possession, Christopher Johnson stepped in front of a Jensen aerial for an interception. Five plays later, O’Malley raced in from 30 yards for a 29-7 lead with 3:34 left in the game.

“Our offense did not do a good enough job and, I, as the offensive coordinator who is calling the plays, need to do better,” Lieser said. “We needed to keep our defense off of the field by us sustaining drives. They made us a little one-dimensional where we could not run the ball well. When your defense is asked to play 16 plays in a row, eventually the dam is going to break. Coach (Adam) Neubarth did a good job of coaching the kids up, but we just need to clear up some mistakes.”

TCU ran 20 offensive plays from late in the third quarter to three for the Eagles until Frederick’s 45-yard scoring run with just over two minutes left in the game.

Lieser was happy with the running by Frederick, and James (Osborne) and Marqavion (Haefner), who did well as wide receivers.

“Offensively we had bright spots, but we just need to be more consistent in that pass game,” Lieser said.

New Ulm is at Jordan next Thursday.
