Area roundup: St. Mary’s football bounces back, Eagles top Waseca in 4

PREP FOOTBALL

St. Mary’s 48, HLO/F 18

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s bounced back from last week’s loss with a 48-18 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday in 9-man prep football action.

Mark Anderson led the Knights with four touchdown passes and 160 yards through the air. Kaleb Wait had seven catches for 136 yards and two TDs also for the Knights, while Talan Helget had three catches for 56 yards and a score and Jon Peterman ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Wyatt Pollard also had eight carries for 97 yards and a score.

Brandon Braulick had an interception and three solo tackles for St. Mary’s on defense.

Lakeview 48,

Springfield 22

LAKEVIEW — Lakeview topped Springfield 48-22 on Thursday night in a prep football game.

Jakob Nachreiner threw for 139 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Tigers, while MaCoy Krick and Brayden Sturm each had a TD reception. Ashtin Johnson rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown also for Springfield. Ashton Toll led the Tigers’ defense with 15 tackles and an interception.

Cedar Mountain 50,

Nicollet 20

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain downed Nicollet 50-20 on Thursday in a 9-man prep football game.

Cooper Freitag was 6 for 16 passing for 129 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Cougars, while Carson Schiller was 3 for 3 for 63 yards and a score. Freitag also ran 16 times for 135 yards and a touchdown, while Christian Belcher had 10 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown, Maverick Weber had a TD rushing and Brannden Pendleton had a TD rushing.

Pendleton also had an interception for the Cedar Mountain defense, while Ryan Kevelin had an interception.

No stats were reported for Nicollet.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

New Ulm 3, Waseca 1

WASECA — New Ulm topped Waseca 25-21, 26-28, 25-20, 25-22 on Thursday in a Big South Conference volleyball match.

Amber Lee led the Eagles with 48 set assists, seven kills, five blocks and two ace serves, while Ella Landsteiner had 13 kills and six blocks. Ella Freiderich had 25 digs also for New Ulm, while Afton Hulke had 14 digs and six aces and Laura Bertrang had 11 kills and seven blocks.

New Ulm hosts Blue Earth Area at home on Tuesday.

LCWM 3, MVL 0

LAKE CRYSTAL — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 on Thursday night in a nonconference volleyball match.

Ava Munsen and Gabbie Bleick each had eight kills to lead the Chargers’ attack, while Ella Hunter had 11 digs and Kerigan Brau had 21 set assists and eight digs. Mackenzie Merseth added six kills and three blocks for MVL.

MVL is at Sleepy Eye for a Tomahawk Conference match on Thursday.

Cedar Mountain 3,

Madelia 0

MADELIA — Cedar Mountain swept Madelia 25-15, 25-11, 25-19 on Thursday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Hailey Hollar led Cedar Mountain with 12 kills and 14 digs, while Nadia Meyers had eight kills, 17 set assists and 12 digs. Lauren Baringer and Kenley Schiller each had three aces for the Cougars, while Aubrey Steffl had 13 digs and four kills, Mykenna Vollmer had five kills and Teresa Larsen had four kills.

Brooke Lensing led Madelia with six kills, while Ashley Sorenson had 19 set assists and four kills. Jada Taylor led Madelia in digs with nine, while Ashlynn Sweet had four kills and two blocks.

BOYS SOCCER

New Ulm 3, Waseca 0

NEW ULM — New Ulm shut out Waseca 3-0 on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys soccer game.

Ethan Goff earned the shutout in a big way with 22 saves in net. Brennan Shaver had two goals for New Ulm, while Nils Quist had a goal and an assist, Justin Thompson had an assist and Nick Zins had an assist.

New Ulm hosts Marshall at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Waseca 8, New Ulm 2

NEW ULM — Waseca downed New Ulm 8-2 on Thursday night in a Big South Conference girls soccer game.

Bryn Nesvold scored both goals for New Ulm while goalie Ariana Dreyer made seven saves.

New Ulm is at Marshall for a 7:15 p.m. conference game on Tuesday.

PREP CROSS-COUNTRY

Springfield/CM girls take 1st in Mankato

MANKATO — The Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls cross-country team finished first at a Mankato Loyola meet, while the Springfield/CM boys finished second.

Emmie McCone led the Springfield/CM girls with a second-place finish (21:59), while Katie Thram took sixth (23:05). For the Springfield/CM boys, Ben Potter took fifth (19:22), while Matthew Groebner took sixth (19:24).
