Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion brings home consolation championship

ELY — The Sleepy Eye Junior Legion baseball team topped Ely 6-2 on Saturday in the DII Junior Legion Baseball State Tournament consolation title game.

Sleepy Eye, which finished its season with a 17-5 record, broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the fifth inning and added three more insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Arian Saenz got the complete-game win, giving up eight hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out three and throwing 93 pitches. He also doubled and drove in a run.

Winsten Nienhaus went 2 for 4 with a double to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate, while Caden Evers was 2 for 4. Mark Anderson was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and two walks also for Sleepy Eye, while Owen Weiss, Cody Schultz and Talan Helget all doubled.

Helget and Weiss also each had an RBI.

Brecken Sandberg took the loss for Ely in six innings, giving up six hits and three walks for three earned runs while striking out one.
