Wyczawski to be honored at Johnson Park on Saturday

It is a plaque to remember a gentleman who will never be forgotten.

This Saturday prior to the 3:30 p.m. game of the New Ulm Junior Upper Midwest Classic game at Johnson Park, a plaque will be formally dedicated to the memory of the late Carl “Red” Wyczawski.

Wyczawski was not only New Ulm’s Baseball Ambassador but also the City’s “Goodwill Ambassador.”

The opening statement on the plaque reads “If Red didn’t already know your name as you entered Johnson Park, he soon would and he would never forget it.”

Wyczawski moved to New Ulm in the mid 50s and soon became involved in the New Ulm community.

Baseball-wise, he chaired the 1958 Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament and that tournament broke attendance records at that time.

He was also the manager of the 1978 New Ulm American Legion Baseball team that went to the American Legion World Series in Yakima, Washington.

Red’s son Paul said that his dad would be tickled to see his memory and baseball legacy honored.

“From the late 50s when he got to New Ulm, he had a tremendous baseball background from being with the Milwaukee Braves and previous to that as sports writer in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He immediately jumped on the bandwagon in New Ulm and did whatever he could do to help promote not just baseball but New Ulm overall. And one of the first things he got involved in was the 1958 state amateur tournament. His allegiance to baseball in New Ulm at all levels grew from there. His true love was connecting with the different baseball players.”

Wyczawski passed away on August 9, 2021.

GOLD IN NEBRASKA: New Ulm Legion Gold left on Wednesday for Omaha, Nebraska to play in the “Battle Of Omaha” tournament this weekend.

Gold will play the Omaha, KS Senators and Omaha Gross on Friday and then Omaha-Brooklawn on Saturday. That night, members of the New Ulm Gold team will attend the College World Series before playing a game on Sunday and then returning home.
