New Ulm Legion Gold edges Marshall 4-3

NEW ULM — New Ulm Legion Gold scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then added a big insurance run in the fifth to go on and top Marshall 4-3 Monday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Johnson Park.
Josh Giefer got the win for Gold. He went the distance and allowed seven hits and struck out three.
Parker Schmidt took the loss for Marshall in relief of starter Charlie Jacobson, who went three innings and allowed one hit and struck out five.
Lucas Suess had two hits for New Ulm and drove in two runs.
In Game 2, Marshall led New Ulm 6-5 after five innings when this issue of The Journal went to press.
In Game 1, Marshall struck for two unearned runs off of Giefer in the first inning which resulted in a two-run double from Andrew Wallin.
But Gold struck for three runs in the fourth when Jaden Drill laced a one-out single and Carter Lang followed with a double. Evan Wiltscheck followed with a walk to load the bases.
A wild pitch by Schmidt scored Drill. Ayden Jensen walked before Lucas Suess had a two-run single for a 3-2 New Ulm Gold lead.
Gold added another run in the fifth when Maddox Mortensen walked and stole second. He scored on a Giefer RBI single.
In Game 2, New Ulm erased a 1-0 Marshall lead with four runs in the third on a walk to Mortensen, a Giefer single, a Jaden Drill triple, a Carter Lang double and an Ayden Jensen triple.
But Marshall retook the lead off Gold starter Carter Lang in the fourth inning.
