Area roundup: Springfield holds off RRC, Jacobs sets single-season home run record for Madelia

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield’s run in the first inning on Tuesday was enough to hold on for a shutout win over Red Rock Central in nonconference softball action.

Jalivia Richert was 2 for 3 with a double to lead the Tigers at the plate, while Megan Ploeger doubled and had an RBI and Brooklyn Sturm was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Richert also got the win in all seven innings of work, giving up two hits while striking out 11.

Hailey Amsden had both of RRC’s hits in the game.

T/ML/GHEC 8, Madelia 5

TRUMAN — Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain defeated Madelia 8-5 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Emma Coil took the loss for Madelia in six innings of work, giving up nine hits and five walks for four earned runs while striking out six. Abby Jacobs led the Blackhawks at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Corban Tatro was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jacobs’ home run also broke the school softball record for homers in a single season with six.

Madelia (5-12) plays in Comfrey on Thursday.

Wabasso 13, GFW 9

WINTHROP — Wabasso topped Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 13-9 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

The Rabbits were led by Sophia Hanna, who was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored. Callie Burns also had two hits for Wabasso, while Sara Carlson had a triple and Kelsey Fischer had a double. Avery Carlson got the win in the circle.

Morgan Aylsworth had a triple, a homer and three RBIs for GFW, while pitcher Brooklyn Werner struck out nine.

The Rabbits (14-6) begin section play on Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 11, Cleveland 8

CLEVELAND — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Cleveland 11-8 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Julie Helget pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out one while walking six and giving up two hits for St. Mary’s (14-4). Lacey Mathiowetz pitched the remainder of the game and struck out six while walking two and giving up four hits. Helget also helped lead the Knights at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Addie Hoffmann was also 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Maya Nelson and Mathiowetz each went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Kya Krzmarzick and Kallie Zarn also each added a hit and an RBI for the Knights.

Prep baseball

Sleepy Eye 14, BLHS 3, 5 inn.

HECTOR — Sleepy Eye downed Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 14-3 on Tuesday in five innings of a Tomahawk Conference baseball game.

The Indians were led by Nick Mielke, who was 2 for 3 with an RBI and also got the win in three innings of work. He struck out five and gave up no hits. Jackson Huiras also was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double for Sleepy Eye.

For BLHS, Eli Kirtz was 1 for 2 with a run scored, while Chase Hubin was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Kirtz also took the loss for BLHS on the mound, giving up 11 hits and three walks while striking out two in 3 1/3 innings.

Sleepy Eye (12-4) travels to take on Redwood Valley for a nonconference game Thursday.

SEU boys 159, Madelia 213

SEU girls 210, Madelia 269

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye United boys’ and girls’ golf teams cruised to a pair of wins over Madelia on Tuesday.

SEU’s Carson Erickson was the medalist for the boys with a 1-under-par round of 35. SEU’s Sam Herzog (40), Kaleb Weiss (42), Jacob Schultz (42) finished second and tied for third.

SEU’s Liz Schwint led all girls as the medalist with a season-low score of 48. Meriden Andres (52), Sam Price (54) and Chloe Walter (56) followed Schwint for second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Madelia boys were led by Noah Tierney (49), while the Madelia girls were led by Savannah Wyman (57).

LSH girls 204, New Ulm 215

LE SUEUR — Le Sueur-Henderson girls’ golf team defeated New Ulm 204-215 on Tuesday in a girls’ dual meet at LeSueur Country Club.

Leading New Ulm at the meet was Kate Frauenholtz (46) and Elyse Dreckman (54).
