WINDOM — New Ulm Cathedral earned a pair of wins on Saturday at a Windom softball invitational.

The Greyhounds first beat Martin County West 9-2 and finished the gay beating Fairmont 13-5.

In the first win, Megan Haala got the win in the circle in five innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out two. She also had a hit and three RBIs to help lead the Cathedral bats, while Jenna Hotovec was 2 for 4.

Haala also got the win in the second game in three innings of work, giving up two walks and striking out two. Lily Brennan led the Greyhounds at the plate in that game, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Emily Schommer was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Hotovec had three RBIs.

Lakeville South 3, New Ulm 1

New Ulm 7, Tartan 4

New Ulm 8, Ellsworth (Wisc.) 6

LAKEVILLE — The New Ulm softball team went 2-1 on Saturday at the Lakeville North tourney on Saturday.

The Eagles fell in Game 1 against Lakeville South 3-1 but came back to win their second game of the day 7-4 over Tartan and third game 8-6 over Ellsworth Wisc.

Springfield 12, BOLD 1

Redwood Valley 10, Springfield 0 (5 inn.)

MILROY — Springfield went 1-1 on Saturday at a baseball invitational in Milroy at Irish Yard.

The Tigers downed BOLD 12-1 in five innings but fell 10-0 in five to Redwood Valley.

In the win over BOLD, James Coffland was 3 for 3 with a homer, a triple and three RBIs to lead the Tiger bats, while Luke Boyle and Tate Mathiowetz each had two hits. Mathiowetz drove in three RBIs also. Kade Nachreiner got the win in five innings, giving up six hits and a walk for one run while striking out three.

Mathiowetz had the Tigers’ lone hit in the loss to Redwood Valley, while Ethan Louwagie took the loss on the mound in one inning of work, giving up three earned runs.

Minneapolis SW 12,

New Ulm 7

Elk River 5, New Ulm 4

ST. CLOUD — Minneapolis Southwest defeated New Ulm 12-7 and Elk River held off New Ulm 5-4 on Saturday at the St. Cloud baseball tournament.

Taylor Hansen took the loss against Minneapolis Southwest, giving up one hit and four walks in three innings while fanning one. Maddox Mortensen and Carter Lang led the Eagles at the plate, going 2 for 4 each. Mortensen had two doubles and two RBIs.

Lang took the loss against Elk River in five innings of work, giving up two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. Jaden Drill was 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead New Ulm.

New Ulm girls finish 7th, boys 12th at

Fairmont Invite

FAIRMONT — The New Ulm girls’ golf team took seventh (432) at Interlachen Golf Course on Saturday in the Fairmont Girls’ Golf Invitational, while the New Ulm boys finished 12th at Rose Lake Golf Course in the Fairmont Boys’ Golf Invitational (417).

Fairmont won the girls’ invite with a score of 367, while St. Peter won for the boys’ side with a 325.

Kate Frauenholtz tied for 13th with a 102 to lead the New Ulm girls, while teammate Katie Wilker tied for 21st with a 108.

Leading the Eagles boys’ team was Will Fossen, who shot a 90 to finished tied for 33rd. New Ulm’s Will Weidman shot a 102 to tie for 55th.

Men’s track and field

MLC men finish 2nd at UMAC championships

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College men finished second at the UMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) on Saturday.

MLC finished the two-day meet with a total of 182.5 points, breaking their previous high total at the event. UW-Superior took first place with a team score of 248.5 points, while UMM finished third with 96 points.

Carson Oestreich made it a clean sweep of the sprinting events over the weekend, backing up his 200 Meter Dash win on Friday with a first-place time of 10.76 in the 100 Meter Dash on Saturday. Oestreich also joined Eric Raasch, Cole Burow and Jon Holtz to help the Knights take second in the 4×100 Meter Relay with a time of 44.34.

Oestreich finished the event with 22 points accounted for, tying him for eighth among all male athletes in the meet.

Caleb Foelske closed his career with a pair of third-place finishes in the Discus (39.63 meters) and Shot Put (14.93 meters), with his final throw in the Shot Put breaking his own school record by almost half of one meter.

On the track, Micah Otto (16.3) and Seth Veers (16.3) took third and fourth, respectively, in the 110 Meter Hurdles, with Otto crossing the finish line just 0.002 seconds before Veers for bragging rights. Veers finished sixth in the Triple Jump with a jump of 11.95 meters.

Caleb Lash (16:58.56) and Ryan Maertz (17:16.46) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 5000 Meters. Maertz also took eighth in the 1500 Meters, where Joshua Zander (4:26.68) and Josiah Loersch (4:29.32) finished in the top six.

Micah Schibbelhut (53.36) led four MLC runners in the top 10 in the 400 Meters in seventh place, followed by Raasch (53.92), Holtz (54.77) and Nathan Pausma (56.11).

Benjamin Hillmer and Lucas Martin tied for fourth place in the High Jump with jumps of 1.68 meters. Martin also finished seventh in the Triple Jump with a top jump of 11.62 meters.

Women’s track and field

MLC women take 4th at UMAC championships

MORRIS — The Martin Luther College women finished the two-day UMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in fourth place on Saturday.

The Knights finished the event with a program-record 140 points, shattering their previous high of 111.5 points set last season. University of Minnesota Morris won the event with 216 points, followed by Bethany Lutheran College (149) and UW-Superior (144) in the top three.

MLC took home one first-place finish on Saturday in the 4×400 Meter Relay, as the team of Margaret Gabb, Maya Habben, Claire Tomhave and Emily Dobberstein finished in a time of 4:29.06.

Dobberstein finished a stellar weekend with fourth-place finishes in both the 400 Meters and 100 Meter Hurdles. Over the two-day event, Dobberstein accounted for 22 points, the eighth-highest total among all women at the meet.

Tomhave (sixth), Gabb (eighth), Maia Pankow (ninth) and Lydia Krenke (tenth) all finished in the top 10 in the 400 Meters, while Grace Seim (fifth) and Madelyn Plitzuweit (seventh) added to the point totals in the 100 Meter Hurdles.

Habben finished fourth in the 1500 Meters with a time of 5:27.73, while Hannah Kratz took fifth place in the 5000 Meters in a time of 21:57.62.

Pankow finished eighth in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 13.37, and also helped the Knights to a second-place finish in the 4×100 Meter Relay (53.67).

In the field events, Emma Nelson took fourth in the Shot Put with a throw of 10.33 meters, and also added a sixth-place finish in the Discus with a throw of 27.9 meters. Emmaline Hagedorn (9.94 meters) and Nicole Porter (9.93 meters) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Shot Put.

Plitzuweit took sixth in the Triple Jump with a top jump of 8.89 meters, while Seim added a seventh-place finish in the High Jump (1.33 meters) and eighth-place finish in the Triple Jump (8.47 meters).

College baseball

UNW 10, MLC 0 (Game 1)

UNW 29, MLC 6 (Game 2)

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College baseball team saw its season come to a close with a pair of losses at University of Northwestern-St. Paul (UNW) by the scores of 10-0 and 29-6 on Saturday.

The Eagles jumped in front early and cruised to a 10-0 win in Game 1.

UNW scored at least one run in five of its six times at bat, which was more than enough support which was more than enough support for their ace on the mound, Owen Boerema.

Boerema entered the day with an ERA under 1.0 in conference play and allowed only two hits in seven innings en route to his fourth shutout in seven conference starts.

Mason Cox and Tony Sahatjian accounted for the two MLC hits. Andrew Deisinger (0-4) allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in six innings in defeat on the mound for the Knights.

The Knights showed the fatigue of playing their seventh game in four days as the Eagles took Game 2 by a score of 29-6.

MLC scored three times in the opening frame to take the early lead, but UNW came back to tie the game 3-3 in the second inning, and then scored 25 runs off four MLC pitchers in the next three innings.

Carter Seltz provided two runs for the Knights with his first career home run in the sixth inning. Seltz, Cox and Zach Klement each accounted for two hits for MLC

Jonas Lindemann (1-3) started on the mound for MLC and allowed 10 runs in three innings of work.

The Knights completed their season with a record of 3-28 overall and 3-18 in UMAC play.
