Dodge County shuts out New Ulm

NEW ULM– Quick and fast.

Dodge County used three solid lines and quickness to score two goals in the second period and added another goal in the third to blank New Ulm 3-0 Saturday afternoon in nonconference girls’ hockey.

New Ulm goaltender Ava Brennen stopped 25 of 28 Wildcats shots.

Dodge County (9-9) outshot New Ulm 28-13.

“They are a quick ‘AA’ team that has a lot of skaters,” New Ulm coach Kristen Faber said. “And to be honest, from their first line to their third line, there is not a lot of drop-off. They kept coming at us — we got stuck in our defensive zone a few times — and they capitalized on a couple of opportunities. And we did not get a lot of quality shots. They are a good opponent and games that I like to play in.”

After a scoreless first period, Dodge County put two goals on the board in the second period.

Greta Petree gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the 6:34 mark when she beat Brennen with a bad-angle shot that went over Brennen’s left shoulder.

Nora Cartensen made it 2-0 just over six minutes later when she was wide open to Brennen’s left.

Faber thought that the second period, where the Eagles were outshot 11-6, was the downfall.

“Those two goals and they started to control the puck more in their offensive zone,” Faber said. “We ran two lines and they ran three, kind of wore us down a bit.”

Dodge County put a bow on the game in the third period when McKenzie Rich lifted a backhand by Brennen at the 13:27 mark.

“These are games that I like to play in where we really get to see what our girls have,” Faber said.” I don’t like to lose, but as we move into sections and close out the last weeks of the regular season, they are a good opponent to see.”

New Ulm (14-3) hosts Prior Lake Tuesday at 7 p.m., at the New Ulm Civic Center.
