Eagles hold off St. Peter 77-68

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Eagles boys’ basketball team remained on top of the Big South-East Conference basketball standings Thursday night with a 77-68 win over St. Peter.
Zander Fischer led New Ulm (7-3, 4-0) with 20 points. James Osborne added 15 points with Charlie Osborne and Colton Benson each scoring 14 points.
Bennett Olson led St.Peter (6-6, 3-4) with 22 points.
The Eagles trailed at halftime 31-30 after the Saints closed out the first half with a 12-2 run.
St. Peter grabbed a 36-32 lead on a Tate Olson 3-pointer early in the second half.
But a 3-pointer from Charlie Osborne gave the Eagles a 44-41 lead with 12 minutes left and New Ulm never lost the lead.
New Ulm increased its lead to 51-42 later on a James Osborne basket.
St. Peter cut the lead to 57-49 before Colton Benson buried a 3-pointer that sparked a 7-0 run
Two free throws from Charlie Osborne with just over 5 minutes to go in the game saw the Eagles holding a commanding 64-49 lead.
St. Peter rallied to cut the lead to 66-61 and then 70-63.
But the Eagles ran off a 5-0 run for a 75-63 lead with 1 minute left in the game — New Ulm’s last 2 points in that spurt coming on Fischer’s third dunk of the game.
The Eagles host LeSueur-Henderson at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
