New Ulm girls crush Trojans

NEW ULM — It seemed like every time the New Ulm girls’ hockey team touched the puck, it was bound to end up in the back of the net.

Ten different players scored a goal for the New Ulm girls on Tuesday as the Eagles dominated the Big South Conference game, defeating Worthington 18-0 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

New Ulm (3-0) outshot Worthington 59-9 in the contest.

The Eagles got four goals from Madalyn O’Connor as she scored two goals in both the first and second period. She also had five assists in the game.

Brooke Arneson also scored four goals and she had a pair of assists. Julia Helget had three goals and four assists and Evelyn Sellner had a goal and four assists. Jada Rahe, Brooke Merkel, Emma Brudelie, Afton Hulke, Michelle Smith and Mya Hornick also scored a goal in the game for the Eagles. Tristyn Wolner had two assists while Malorie Anderson and Rahe also had an assist.

New Ulm opened the game with seven goals in the first period. Both O’Connor and Arneson scored two goals while Rahe, Sellner and Merkel also added a goal for the 7-0 lead.

It didn’t get any better for the Trojans in the second period with New Ulm scoring eight times. Helget and O’Connor both had a pair of goals while Brudelie, Hulke, Arneson and Smith also added goals.

New Ulm finished the scoring with three goals in the third. There, Helget, Arneson and Hornick scored for the Eagles. New Ulm also scored four power play goals in the game, taking advantage of eight Worthington penalties.

New Ulm hosts Marshall on Thursday in another Big South Conference game.
