Salama’s shootout goal lifts Steel past Mustangs

NEW ULM — When Lahoussine Salama scored the first goal for the Steel, it gave New Ulm an early 1-0 lead.

His second goal of the game lifted the Steel to a win.

Salama’s wrist shot beat Peoria netminder T.J. DeMeulenare in a shootout and lifted the Steel to a 4-3 win over Peoria Saturday night in an NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

The win avenges a 7-3 loss to Peoria Friday night.

Gus Cantwell and Matt Zaruba had the other goals for the Steel. Parker Dorn had two assists.

“He played hard tonight,” Steel coach Curtis Doell said about Salama. “This has been a long week for us here — we had back-to-back against [Peoria]. And last night the way it ended caused a little fire under us today.”

New Ulm grabbed a 2-0 lead early on a power-play goal by Salama followed up by a goal from Zaruba just over a minute later before the Mustangs cut the lead to 2-1 after one period.

The Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 in the second period and then took a 3-2 lead midway through the third period.

But Cantwell knotted the game in the third period at the 5:43 mark.

After a scoreless overtime, it was Salama to the rescue in the shootout.

“This was an awesome win,” Doell said. “The players were excited — our fans were excited. Our crowd was into it. That was an exciting game.”

The Steel are home at 7:10 p.m. Friday against Granite City.
