Area roundup: Knights stay unbeaten, Eagles wrap up girls’ tennis individual playoffs

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s finished its Tomahawk Conference schedule perfect on Saturday with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-20 win over Springfield in conference volleyball action at St. Mary’s High School.

The Knights (24-0, 8-0) were led by Madison Mathiowetz’s 20 kills, 16 digs and three aces, while Jaci Domeier had 13 kills, eight digs, three blocks and three aces. Julia Helget added 13 digs for the Knights, while Reagan Severson had 12 digs, Bella Hoffmann had 19 set assists and 10 digs and Allie Labat had 21 set assists and 12 digs.

No stats were reported by Springfield (11-12, 3-5) on Saturday.

St. Mary’s is at New Ulm Cathedral for a nonconference regular-season finale on Tuesday, while the Tigers are at Windom Area on Monday.

Individual tourney

ST. PETER — The New Ulm High School girls’ tennis team wrapped up its season by competing in the Section 2AA Individual Girls’ Tennis Tournament on Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

In singles action, New Ulm’s Makiah Otto started the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mankato West’s Riley Lowe before falling to St. Peter’s Annika Southworth 6-3, 6-2 in the next round. Amelia Hildebrandt of St. Peter defeated New Ulm’s Malia Emerson 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles, Marshall’s Leah Matzner and Eden Knudson defeated New Ulm’s Emily Guggisberg and Lydia King 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Also in doubles, Taya Oberloh and Brooke Nordseth of Worthington defeated New Ulm’s Lillian Merkel and Melanie Merkel 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.

College Volleyball

UW-Superior 3, MLC 0

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Martin Luther College volleyball team was unable to complete the season sweep of UW-Superior in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-17) defeat on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets were in control from the opening serve as they cruised to wins in the first two sets. In the third game, the teams were tied 15-15 until UWS won 10 of the last 12 points to finish off the sweep.

Rhianna Hunter led MLC with six kills. Kelsey Birschbach and Lauren Paulsen each recorded five kills. Kate Aswege led MLC with 14 digs.

MLC fell to 8-12 on the season and 7-3 in UMAC play in defeat. The Knights will return to action on Friday when they travel to Crown College.
