St. Mary’s sweeps Sleepy Eye in cross-town battle

St. Mary’s 3, Sleepy Eye 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Sleepy Eye 25-20, 25-12, 25-15 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Friday.

Madison Mathiowetz had 13 kills, 13 digs and three blocks for the Knights and Jaci Domeier had 12 kills and 11 digs. Julia Helget had nine digs and Reagan Severson had 11 digs. Abby Schwartz finished with seven kills.

Bella Hoffmann finished with 21 set assists for the Knights and Allie Labat had 17 set assists.

St. Mary’s (20-0, 5-0) hosts Nicollet on Monday.

GFW 3, BLHS 1

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20 in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action on Thursday.

Julia Schweiss had 21 kills and Brynn Busse had 34 set assists and 14 digs. Taylor Haas had 23 digs and Jenna Schweiss had 13 digs.

GFW hosts Wabasso on Tuesday.

Nicollet 3, ML/GHEC/T 0

NICOLLET — Nicollet swept Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 25-18, 25-21, 25-16 on Thursday in Valley Conference softball action.

Marah Hulke had 11 kills and 13 set assists and Brooklyn Bode had 10 kills. Olivia Kachelmeier had 12 digs and Brook Gohr had 10 digs.

Nicollet is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday.

Sibley East 3,

Mankato Loyola 0

ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated Mankato Loyola 25-10, 25-13, 25-8 in a nonconference volleyball game on Thursday.

For the Wolverines, Molly Krentz had 10 kills and eight digs and Jennifer Wolter had seven kills and nine service aces. Adeline Williams finished with 17 set assists and eight digs and Ellie Kreft had seven set assists and three aces.

Sibley East (13-7, 1-3) hosts LeSueur-Henderson on Thursday.

Cleveland 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Cleveland swept Madelia in a Valley Conference volleyball match on Thursday.

Brooke Lensing had six kills and Dora Facundo had nine digs for Madelia. Ashley Sorenson had 11 set assists.

Madelia (10-16-1, 4-4) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday.

Canby 3, Wabasso 0

CANBY — Canby made quick work of Wabasso, winning 25-10, 25-16, 25-12 in a nonconference volleyball match on Thursday.

Audrey Johnson had eight digs and Kelsey Frank had seven set assists for Wabasso. The Rabbits play Red Rock Central on Friday.

Prep cross-country

S/CM girls 1st, boys 5th at Sleepy Eye

SLEEPY EYE — The Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls’ cross country team took first at the Sleepy Eye Cross-Country meet on Thursday.

For S/CM, Emmie McCone took fourth overall in 20:33 and Katie Thram was fifth (20:35). Lily McCone was sixth (20:38) and Skyla Dauer was 10th (21:50).

Ben Potter led the S/CM boys with a seventh-place finish (17:45) and Zach Hensch (17th, 18:11), Matthew Groebner (21st, 18:15) and Triston Groebner (30th, 18:57) followed.

College golf

BECKER — The Martin Luther College men’s golf team rode a strong opening day performance from senior Kyle Lindemann to a sixth-place finish on day one of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Golf Championships at Pebble Creek Golf Club on Thursday.

MLC finished the day with a total team score of 335 strokes, 16 strokes better than they shot at the course during the UMAC Preview tournament on September 6.

Lindemann led the way for MLC with a round of 77, overcoming a slow start (bogeys on the first two holes) to shoot 37 on the front nine before carding a 40 on the back.

John Fix followed by carding an 82 for MLC, while Benjamin Gensmer (88), Micah Otto (90) and Paul Frick (96) rounded out the MLC line-up.

On the women’s side, MLC shot a season-best total on day one with a team score of 462 total strokes, topping it’s best round of the season (469 at the Cougar Invite on September 25) by seven strokes. The score was enough to put MLC in sixth place at the end of the round.

Melina Satorius (100) led the way, while Lexi Fischer (102) overcame a slow start to shoot 46 on the back nine.

AnaCristina Iglesias (113) carded the best round of her collegiate career by five strokes, while Julia Hallman (147) rounded out the MLC line-up.

MLC will return to action Friday for day two of the three-round tournament at Pebble Creek GC.
