Area roundup: Taylor has big day for GFW

GFW 44, Medford 6

MEDFORD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Treay Taylor scored five touchdowns as the Thunderbirds crushed Medford in Mid Southeast District football action on Friday.

Taylor scored on runs of 18, 5 and 33 yards and he had two receiving touchdowns of 23 and 27 yards. He finished with 187 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving on three catches.

Jack Panitzke had a 19-yard touchdown run for the Thunderbirds and Brody Hentges threw two touchdown passes and had 82 yards passing in the game.

GFW is at New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva on Friday.

Luverne 31, New Ulm 20

LUVERNE — Luverne jumped out to a 25-0 lead and defeated New Ulm in South Central District football action on Friday.

Luverne’s Casey Sehr threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns and Gannon Ahrendt had eight catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

New Ulm got a 55-yard touchdown run from Ayden Jensen to cut the Luverne lead to 25-8 after the 2-point conversion and the Eagles cut the lead to 25-14 on a Marqavion Haefner 28-yard run.

Dylen Carreon had a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cut the Luverne lead to 25-20, but the Cardinals added a late score for the win.

Carreon had 28 carries for 158 yards and a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Jensen had eight carries for 61 yards and a touchdown and Haefner had the 28-yard touchdown. Haefner also had seven tackles and Jaden Miller finished with 11 tackles. Ethan Dake had eight tackles and Jaden Drill had seven tackles.

New Ulm hosts Fairmont next Friday.

St. Mary’s 26, Cedar Mountain 8

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s scored 26 unanswered points in the second half and defeated Cedar Mountain in 9-man, South District football action on Friday.

Cedar Mountain’s lone touchdown came in the first quarter when Cooper Freitag hit Nick Freitag for a 58-yard touchdown pass.

The Knights got on the board in the third quarter when Jon Petermann returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards fora touchdown. Carson Domeier scored on a run of 3 yards to make it 12-8 and Domeier then hit Kaleb Wait for a 15-yard touchdown strike.

Domeier found Wait again in the fourth quarter for a 15-yard score and Domeier’s two-point conversion run made it 26-8.

St. Mary’s (4-0) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Friday and Cedar Mountain (2-2) hosts Red Rock Central on Friday.

Springfield 44, TMB 38

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield rolled to a Southwest District victory over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday.

Springfield (3-1) is at St. James on Friday.

Nicollet 52, Madelia 20

NICOLLET — Nicollet crushed Madelia in 9-man football action on Friday.

Nicollet (1-3) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday and Madelia (0-4) hosts Mabel-Canton on Friday.

Sibley East 6, New Ulm 1

NEW ULM — Sibley East defeated New Ulm in a nonconference girls’ tennis match on Friday.

Lydia King got New Ulm’s only win. She picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win over Mallory Sylvester.

New Ulm hosts Chanhassen on Monday.

Men’s soccer

Northland 5, MLC 3

ASHLAND, Wis. — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team started strong, but could not slow the Northland College offense in a 5-3 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference defeat on Friday.

The Knights jumped on top early thanks to a Lucas Martin goal in the 17th minute, and then doubled that lead in the 26th minute thanks to a penalty kick goal by Martin.

The Lumberjacks responded quickly, however, as they scored in the 31st minute to cut the MLC advantage in half, and then added two more goals in the next eight minutes to take a 3-2 edge at the half.

MLC once again started strong in the second half as Clay Hirsch tied the game 3-3 in the 52nd minute, but Northland added goals in the 61st and 76th minutes, respectively, to score the win.

Martin’s goals were his first two of the season, while Hirsch’s tally was also his first. Martin was credited with a team-best three shots on goal, while Xander Heiman and Noah Kvidt each added two shots on goal.

The Knights finished with 10 shots on goal compared to eight for Northland for the game.

MLC fell to 1-4-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in UMAC play in defeat. Northland improved to 2-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action Saturday when they travel to UW-Superior for a game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Northland, MLC

ASHLAND, Wis. — The MLC women’s soccer team conceded a late goal in a 2-1 defeat at Northland College in UMAC action on Friday.

The LumberJills took momentum into halftime with a goal in the 43rd minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Knights righted the ship early in the second half and stayed within striking distance.

In the 61st minute, the Knights finally broke through on a penalty kick goal by Kaitlin Bulter to tie the game 1-1. The goal was Butler’s second this season.

The scored remained knotted at 1-1 until the 81st minute, when Northland’s Laura Hank scored the game-winner past MLC keeper Grace Sievert to give the LumberJills the win.

Hannah Schroeder led the Knights with five total shots and two shots on goal. Siever stopped three shots in goal for MLC.

The Knights fell to 1-5-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in UMAC play in defeat. Northland improved to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play with the win.

MLC will return to action Saturday when it travels to UW-Superior for a game scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

NEW ULM — The MLC volleyball team returned home for the first time in nearly three weeks and defeated Northland College 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) on Friday.

The Knights were in control from the start, building a big lead in the opening game on the way to a 1-0 lead in the match, and then scoring eight of the final 10 points in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead overall.

In the third set, the Knights put the LumberJills away with contributions across the board, as eight different players recorded kills.

MLC hit .158 on the attack for the match, led by a strong day by middle hitter Hannah Willems. Willems recorded 10 kills and hit .562, while also contributing three blocks, five digs and one service ace.

Lauren Paulsen and Kelsey Birschbach also had big days with nine kills apiece. Birschbach also finished in double figures with 11 digs.

Kate Aswege led the team with 17 digs, while Anna Treder finished with a team-best 22 assists.

MLC improved to 3-8 on the season and 2-0 in UMAC play with the win. Northland fell to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action Saturday when they host UW-Superior in a match scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.

Prep volleyball

Madelia 3, St. James 0

ST. JAMES — Madelia swept St. James on Thursday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Corban Tatro had 17 digs and six kills and Dora Facundo finished with 12 digs. Brooke Lensing finished with 10 digs. Ashley Sorenson finished with 26 set assists.

Madelia (4-8-1, 2-2) is at the St. James tournament on Saturday.
