JCC sweeps New Ulm

NEW ULM — Jackson County Central had a strong game up front and made quick work of New Ulm, defeating New Ulm 25-10, 25-9, 25-9 in a Big South Conference volleyball match on Thursday at New Ulm High School.

The Eagles were never able to get a lead on JCC as the Huskies improved to 6-2 on the season. New Ulm fell to 5-3 on the season.

The Huskies got out to an early 11-2 in the first set and later went up 17-6 on a New Ulm hitting error. New Ulm’s Laura Bertrang had a cross-court tip that made it 18-7, but the Huskies closed the first set with a kill.

New Ulm took an early 4-3 lead in the second set, but the Huskies went on a 11-1 run to go up 14-5.

Later, a tip by JCC’s Emma Haren made it 18-8 and the Huskies went on a 7-1 run for the final 25-9 score.

The Huskies jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third set and ran away. A pair of hitting errors by the Huskies cut the lead to 12-8, but it was all JCC after that. A hitting error by the Eagles put JCC up 17-8 and the Huskies closed the match with a pair of kills late.

Natalie Yackley had eight set assists and nine digs and Madalyn O’Connor had four kills and three digs. Afton Hulke had four digs and Ella Freiderich finished with nine digs. Bertrang had four kills on the night.

New Ulm hosts Blue Earth Area on Tuesday.
