Cathedral takes down GFW in 3 sets

Cathedral 3, GFW 0

WINTHROP — New Ulm Cathdral swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

For Cathedral, Sydnee Helget had 19 kills, 12 digs and two blocks. Lily Brennan had nine kills and 10 digs and Jenna Hotovec had nine kills and 15 digs. Megan Haala finished with seven kills and eight digs and Emily Schommer had 29 set assists and 10 digs. Annie Edwards finished with 13 set assists and 18 digs.

For GFW, Julia Schweiss had 13 kills and Brynn Busse had five kills, 15 set assists and nine digs. Taylor Schafer had five kills and three blocks and Taylor Haas had 16 digs.

Cathedral (11-2, 4-1) is at the St. James tournament on Saturday.

GFW plays at Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

Nicollet 3, MCW 1

NICOLLET — Nicollet topped Martin County West 26-24, 25-16, 24-26, 25-15 on Thursday night in Valley Conference volleyball action.

Nicollet was led by Brook Gohr’s eight kills and four aces, while Olivia Whitmore and Brooklyn Bode each had six kills. Bode also had 20 digs, while Hayley Selby had 17 digs and four blocks and Emily Lorentz had three aces.

Nicollet (4-6, 2-1) is at Sibley East for a nonconference match on Saturday.

Cedar Mountain 3, Springfield 2

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain got past Springfield in five sets of Tomahawk Conference volleyball action on Thursday night, winning 17-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 17-15.

Brooklyn Sturm led the Tigers with 20 kills, 21 digs and three blocks, while Haley Runck had 10 kills and two blocks. Bree Rasmussen had 27 digs for Springfield also, while Maddy Digmann had 22 digs, Tori Roiger had 19 set assists and Jaeli Richert had 18 set assists, nine kills and 10 digs.

For Cedar Mountain, Hailey Hollar had 17 kills and 22 digs and Megan Sandgren had 11 kills. Megan Sandgren had 36 digs and Morgan Engholm and Nadia Meyers each had 21 digs. Mykenna Vollmer finished with 20 digs and Lauren Baringer had 17 digs. Meyers also had 28 set assists.

The Tigers (7-5, 3-1) are at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday, while the Cougars (10-6, 4-1) are at New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday.

Wabasso 3, BLHS 0

WABASSO — Wabasso swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-11, 25-14, 25-22 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

Kelsey Fischer led the Rabbits with 14 kills, while Avery Carlson had 10 kills and 11 digs, Ashlyn Daub had eight kills and Alivia Olson had seven kills and six digs. Kelsey Frank had 37 set assists for Wabasso, while Audrey Johnson had 10 digs.

Wabasso hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday.

Mayer Lutheran 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Mayer Lutheran swept Sibley East 25-11, 25-9, 25-19 in a Minnesota River Conference volleyball match.

Molly Krentz had eight kills and two blocks and Jennifer Wolter had seven kills and four digs. Adeline Williams had 14 set assists and Morgan Halquist had six digs, three kills and two aces. Katrina Diaz had five digs.

Sibley East (6-6, 0-3) hosts the Sibley East Invite on Saturday.

Girls’ tennis

BEA 6, New Ulm 1

BLUE EARTH — Makiah Otto picked up the lone win for New Ulm at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, but Blue Earth Area won the Big South Conference girls’ tennis match on Thursday.

At No. 2 singles, Lydia King lost 6-0, 6-1 and Emily Guggisberg lost 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. Lana Braun last 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Lillian Merkel and Melanie Merkel lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and Marissa Todesco and Neveah Ubl lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Katie Wilker and Calyn Glaser lost 6-4, 6-2 at third doubles.
