NEW ULM — Hannah Schroeder’s goal in the 26th minute of Wednesday’s Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer match with Buena Vista put Martin Luther College on the board for the first time this season.

The goal also lit a fire in the Knights from there out as they went on to control the match and shut out the Beavers 3-0 at the Martin Luther Soccer Field.

Schroeder, a sophomore midfielder for the Knights, said that she got a good pass from her teammate Kaitlin Butler that led to the breakaway goal in the first half.

“I saw a really good pass from my teammate [Butler], who led me ahead,” Schroeder said. “Then we had two defenders coming up, but we were able to spread them out and it left me open for a shot.”

The shot went past Beavers goalie Madelyn Bigalke in the upper left corner of the net. As the Knights continued to control the ball in the first half, they added another goal in the 45th minute after Schroeder found Avery Broyles for a goal and a 2-0 MLC lead.

The Knights scored for the third time in the 53rd minute after Butler got an unassisted goal.

“It really boosted our team’s morale,” Schroeder said of the team’s scoring effort against the Beavers. “And I think it helped us drive towards our goal, which is to glorify Christ in all we do.”

The Knights took 28 shots against the Beavers, while the Beavers had 15.

MLC goalie Grace Sievert stopped eight shots.

The Knights (1-4) travel to take on Northland next at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
