Cedar Mountain takes 1st at Maple River tourney

MAPLETON — Cedar Mountain finished 3-1 on Saturday at the Maple River tournament, giving the Cougars a first-place finish on the day.

The Cougars first defeated GHEC/ML/T 25-15, 25-15.Sibley East then beat the Cougars 25-20, 25-22. The Cougars then defeated Maple River 25-12, 25-21 and Sibley East 26-24, 19-25, 15-11.

Hailey Hollar combined for 30 kills and 47 digs to lead the Cougars on the day, while Nadia Meyers had 52 total set assists, 42 digs, 21 kills and six aces. Megan Sandgren also added 18 kills and 25 digs on the day for Cedar Mountain, while Teresa Larsen had nine blocks and 13 kills.

Cedar Mountain (8-6) is at Wabasso on Tuesday.

Wabasso hosts tournament on Saturday

WABASSO — Wabasso hosted a prep volleyball tournament on Saturday.

After making it to the Gold Division bracket, Wabasso fell to BOLD 25-21, 25-22. The Rabbits defeated Redwood Valley (25-19, 25-19), Southwest Minnesota Christian (25-10, 12-25, TB) and were beaten by MACCRAY (25-19, 23-25, TB) in Pool A earlier in the day. MACCRAY took first at the tournament.

Kelsey Frank had 55 total set assists, six aces and five blocks for Wabasso during the tournament, while Audrey Johnson had 28 digs and Avery Carlson had 21 kills and 19 digs. Kelsey Fischer had 15 kills, five aces and four blocks on the day for the Rabbits.

Wabasso hosts Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

Girls’ Soccer

Mound Westonka 8, New Ulm 3

MOUND — Mound Westonka topped New ulm 8-3 on Saturday morning in a girls’ soccer match.

New Ulm got a goal each from Annika Morschauser, Brianna Beranek and Livia Reinarts. Elizabeth Dake had 14 saves for New Ulm in net.

New Ulm (3-6) is at Fairmont on Tuesday.

SJU 55, MLC 7

COLLEGEVILLE — The Martin Luther College football team was unable to keep pace with the Johnnies of Saint John’s University (SJU) in a 55-7 defeat on Saturday.

The defense got the Knights on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, when cornerback Ben Arndt intercepted a pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 14-7.

It was all SJU from that point, as their balanced offense finished with 554 total yards (301 through the air and 253 on the ground), while the defense held the MLC ground game (averaging 345.0 yards per game through the first two weeks) to 88 rushing yards.

The Knights did their best to get the passing game going, as Max Nordlie completed 10 of 18 passes, but the Johnnies held them to 73 yards through the air, as well. Mason Cox led the Knights with three catches for 37 yards, while Jack Vogel added three catches for 25 yards.

Aiden Holien led the defense with 10 total tackles. Arndt’s interception was his third of the season, and moved him into a tie for second place in program history with 14 career interceptions.

MLC fell to 1-2 on the season in defeat. SJU improved to 2-0 with the win.

The Knights will return home next week to host Alma College in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday.

College Volleyball

Waldorf 3, MLC 0

FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Martin Luther College volleyball team dropped its final non-conference tune-up 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 28-26) at Waldorf on Saturday.

MLC hit .159 on the attack for the match, with Lauren Paulsen, Hannah Willems and Abigail Winkel each credited with four kills apiece.

Kylie Wolf was credited with 11 assists to lead the team, while Kelsey Birschbach recorded a pair of service aces.

MLC fell to 1-8 on the season in defeat, while Waldorf improved to 7-5 with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, September 21, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran College for the start of UMAC play.
