NEW ULM — New Ulm VFW Silver head coach Mark Grossmann said that he felt his team played an overall decent game in their elimination game against Mankato West Saturday at Johnson Park.

Unfortunately, two costly mistakes by Silver cost them potentially three runs as they fell to West 8-5.

The loss ends Silver’s season at 13-17.

Logan Mielke took the loss for Silver.

Mielke, Parker Kamm and Kaden Wilson each had two hits, with both of Mieke’s hits being doubles.

He also had three RBIs.

Silver out-hit Mankato 12-10.

“We made those mistakes, but outside of that we hit the ball well with 11 hits,” Grossmann said. “But we had three line-drive outs that cost us three runs. They took advantage of our mistakes. I felt that the kids really worked hard — they fought to the end. This was a game where you lose, but you are proud of what happened.”

New Ulm fell behind 5-0 after two innings but clawed back.

A Matt Seidl RBI single in the third cut the lead to 5-1.

But an inning-ending double play on a hard hit ball ended the threat.

Silver grew closer with two runs in the top of the sixth when they added two more runs on a Wilson single and a Mielke double. A Kamm single made it 5-3 before another inning-ending twin killing closed out the inning.

“Those are the little things that at the end of the game swing momentum,” Grossmann said about the double plays. “Those are the little things that kill a team.”
