Silver goes 2-0 on Friday, moves on in elimination bracket

NEW ULM — New Ulm VFW Silver rolled to a 2-0 day on Friday in Second District VFW playoff action.

In the first game, Silver grabbed an early lead and never looked back in the 13-5 victory over Lake Crystal. In New Ulm’s second game of the day against Mankato East, New Ulm won 7-3.

With the two wins, New Ulm moves on to an elimination bracket meeting with Mankato West at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Park. The winner of that game will play again at 5 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Park in a semifinals game. Playoffs conclude Sunday at Johnson Park.

Kaden Larson earned the win for New Ulm against Lake Crystal. He pitched four innings, allowing four hits and three runs.

Lucas Suess had two RBIs to help lead the offense.

New Ulm got its first run in the top of the second after Parker Kamm walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Silver then erupted for six runs in the top of the third, getting two RBIs from Suess, an RBI from Kaden Wilson and RBI from Logan Mielke and New Ulm led 7-0 at that point.

Lake Crystal scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-3, but New Ulm added a single run in the fourth after Larson scored on an error. New Ulm then scored five more runs in the fifth on no hits. Lake Crystal committed five errors in the game.

New Ulm out-hit Lake Crystal 9-6 in the game.

In the second game, Silver was led at the plate by Mielke, who went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. He also pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and got the win without giving up a hit. Zach Riederer also had two hits in the second game for Silver, while Kamm and Larson each added a hit.
