NEW ULM — One day after turning in one of their best performances of the year, New Ulm VFW Silver had the opposite happen on Friday morning against Mankato East Junior Legion.

East hit the ball hard and took advantage of four New Ulm errors in a 16-0, five-inning victory over New Ulm Silver at Johnson Park in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic.

Zach Riederer gave up seven runs in two innings to take the loss for Silver.

Meanwhile, East starter Joe Brieter didn’t allow a hit in his three innings of work. New Ulm got its first hit of the game in the fourth inning off of reliever Ethan Edberg, that coming courtesy of Brock Wellmann. New Ulm finished the game with three hits.

East got on the board right away in the first, scoring three runs, two coming off of sacrifice flies.

In the top of the second East added to the lead when it scored four times. Then, in the top of the third, it put the game away for good when it scored nine runs in the inning. East sent 14 batters to the plate in that inning.

In Silver’s second game of the day at Johnson Park, Maple Grove earned a 10-0 win. Logan Kreilkamp took the loss on the mound. At the plate, Logan Mielke and Kaden Larson had hits for Silver.

The JUMC continues Saturday morning.
