Knights score late to defeat Chargers

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Minnesota Valley Lutheran 6-3 on Monday in Tomahawk Conference softball action.

Sydney Windschitl belted a double to left field and Megan Ahlness hit a triple to the right field fence which scored Windschitl, breaking the tie and making it 4-3 for the Knights. Ahlness scored on a wild pitch. Kya Krzmarzick walked and she scored later on Julia Helget’s double to center field for the 6-3 final.

In the fifth inning, the Knights continued their comeback when Emily Weiss reached base on a hit and she moved to second on an error. Krzmarzick hit a single to center field which scored Weiss to tie the game at 3-3.

In the top of the first inning, Bella Hoffmann walked and she scored on a hit by Ahlness for St. Mary’s first run. Ahlness scored on an MVL error for a 2-0 Knights lead.

Alyssa Ulrich answered for the Chargers with a single. She stole second and scored on an error by St. Mary’s. MacKenna Dressel reached on an error and she scored later on a single by Haley Ditch for a 2-2 tie. Ditch scored on a wild pitch giving the Chargers a 3-2 advantage.

Helget earned the win for the Knights, going seven innings. She gave up three runs (one earned), five hits, walked five and struck out nine.

Ahlness was 4 for 4 with two hits (one of them a triple), two runs scored and two RBIs. Windschitl was 1 for 3 with a double and one run scored.

Becca Kuck took the loss. She pitched seven innings and gave up six runs (three earned), seven hits, walked four and she struck out four batters.

Ditch was 2 for 4 with two hits, a run scored and an RBI for MVL. Ulrich and Dressel each were 1 for 4 with one run scored. Ulrich had one hit.
