Mathiowetz, Riederer, Windschitl lead All-Journal Girls’ Basketball

First Team

Madison Mathiowetz, St. Mary’s, Jr., G

Mathiowetz ended her junior campaign by helping lead the Knights to the state semifinals. She averaged 33 ppg, 11 rpg, 4.9 apg and 4.4 spg. She was also the Tomahawk Conference Player of the Year this year and has 2,716 career points and 999 career rebounds, both school records.

Abbie Riederer,

MVL, Jr., G

Riederer was one of Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s leading players during the 2021 season, averaging 21.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 2.9 apg in 15 games. She also had 3.5 spg and shot 39% from the floor. A two-time unanimous Tomahawk All-Conference player and a member of last season’s All-Journal First Team, Riederer has 1,181 career points.

Sydney Windschitl,

St. Mary’s, Sr., G

Windschitl was one of Sleepy Eye St. Marys’ top players and leaders this year in the Knights’ run to the state semifinals game. She averaged 17.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.4 apg and 2.8 spg. She was an All-Conference player for the third time this season and ends her career second on the Knights’ all-time scoring list with 1,835 points.

Sarah Franta,

Wabasso, Sr., G

Franta led the Rabbits in many area during her senior campaign, finishing with 21.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg and 4.1 spg (second in the Tomahawk Conference). She also had 2.9 apg and shot over 40% from the field. Franta also passed 1,000 career points this season and has 365 career rebounds.

Kadence Hesse,

Sleepy Eye , Fr., G

Despite missing the first four games of the season, Hesse averaged 19.5 ppg, 5.7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.5 assists per contest for the Indians. The two-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-Journal selection now has 739 career points, 272 rebounds, 138 assists and 141 steals with three seasons of varsity playing time left.

Second Team

Brynn Busse,

GFW, So., G

Busse led the Thunderbirds during her sophomore year with 15.7 ppg. She also had 6.6 rpg, 4.7 apg and 3.3 spg. A two-time Tomahawk All-Conference player, Busse sits at 788 career points, 268 career rebounds and 194 career assists.

Brooklyn Sturm, Springfield, Fr., G

Just a freshman, Sturm led the Tigers in scoring at 13.2 ppg and she shot 37 percent from the floor. She also led the team with 2.7 assists per game and she had 5.8 rebounds per game. Sturm will be back for three more seasons to build on her impressive numbers so far.

Reagan Severson,

St. Mary’s, Jr., G

Severson finished her junior campaign with the Knights by averaging 10.2 ppg. She also was an All-Conference player this year and had 3.2 rpg, 3.6 apg and 2.5 spg. For her career, Severson sits at 590 points.

Brea Mertz,

Sleepy Eye, Fr., F

Mertz averaged 10.9 ppg during her freshman campaign with Sleepy Eye. She also had 9.7 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.7 spg and 1.5 bpg. Mertz was an honorable mention in the Tomahawk Conference this season.

Daviney Dreckman, NUHS, Fr., G

Dreckman finished her first year as a full-time starter for the Eagles this year averaging 11.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg. She also had 2.2 spg and shot 45% from the floor. For her career, Dreckman has 387 points, 195 rebounds and 68 steals.
