Area roundup: New Ulm girls rout Waseca

Girls’ Hockey

New Ulm 13, Waseca 0

WASECA — Maddi O’Connor scored five goals as New Ulm blanked Waseca in a Big South Conference girls’ hockey game on Monday.

Afton Hulke and McKenna Strong each added two goals for New Ulm. Erica Sellner, Morgan Klein and Brooke Merkel each scored a goal for the Eagles.

New Ulm (13-2) hosts Worthington on Thursday.

Boys’ Hockey

New Ulm 4, Marshall 0

MARSHALL — New Ulm improved to 14-0 in the Big South Conference as it blanked Marshall on Monday night.

Noah Wilmes, Jace Addy, Jacob Berg and Keagan Schiro all scored a goal for New Ulm (14-2 overall). New Ulm outshot Marshall 37-17.

Joey Gag had 17 saves in net for New Ulm.

New Ulm is at Worthington on Thursday.

Girls’ Basketball

Waseca 78, New Ulm 49

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm in a Big South Conference girls’ basketball game on Monday.

Kirsten Dennis led the Eagles with 18 points and Daviney Dreckman had 13 points and nine rebounds. Bryn Nesvold finished with 8 points and four blocks.

New Ulm (3-12) plays an opponent yet to be determined on Friday in a Big South Conference game.

Nicollet/Loyola 63, Madelia 21

NICOLLET — Nicollet/Mankato Loyola crushed Madelia in a Valley Conference girls’ basketball game on Monday.

Hayley Selby led the Raiders with 13 points and Marah Hulke finished with 10 points. Hatti Hansen and Josi Hansen each scored 8 points for the Raiders.

Nicollet (8-9, 7-8) wrap up the regular season on Thursday at St. Clair. Madelia (0-16, 0-13) host Cleveland on Thursday.

Boys’ Basketball

CM 80, Springfield 68

MORGAN — Chris Dow scored 15 points as Cedar Mountain defeated Springfield in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game on Monday.

Cade Schiller (11) and Devonte Charles (10) each hit double figures for the Cougars.

Mason Leonard (21 points) and Mitchell Buerkle (20 points) led the Tigers in scoring.

Cedar Mountain (6-10) hosts Wabasso on Thursday and Springfield (7-8) is at New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday.

Nicollet 85, LSH 82, OT

NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated Le Sueur-Henderson 85-82 in overtime on Monday night in nonconference boys’ basketball action.

Shane Stevenson led the way for Nicollet with 33 points, while Dylan Willaert had 14 points and Collin Bode had 13.

Bode hit the game-tying 3 for Nicollet with 30 seconds left in regulation, which eventually forced overtime.

The Raiders (8-8) host Sibley East on Thursday.

Boys’ Hockey

New Ulm 3, Waseca 1

NEW ULM — The New Ulm boys’ hockey team got past Waseca 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in a Big South Conference boys’ hockey game.

Blake Soukup, AJ Arneson and Keagan Schiro each added a goal for New Ulm, while Jack Albrecht, Braxten Hoffmann, Noah Wilmes, Kadon Strong and Josh Gulden each added an assist.

Gag made 20 saves in net for the Eagles.

Boys’ Basketball

New Ulm 71, Fairmont 63

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 71-63 on Saturday night in Big South Conference boys’ basketball action.

The Eagles were led by Charlie Osborne’s 20 points, while Josh Wenninger and James Osborne each had 16 points. Isaiah Miller had 10 points also for New Ulm.

St. Mary’s 72, WEM 47

WATERVILLE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 72-47 on Saturday in nonconference boys’ basketball action.

Carson Domeier led the Knights with 16 points, while Trent Steffensmeier and Kaleb Wait added 15 points each.

BLHS 52, Cedar Mountain 44

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Cedar Mountain 52-44 on Saturday in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action.

Chase Hubin led BLHS with 19 points, while Connor McColley added 10 points.

Cedar Mountain was led by Branndon Pendleton’s 16 points, while Dakota Pendleton added 9 points and five assists.

Prep Wrestling

NUA 43, MAHACA 31

NUA 46, Alexandria 30

MORRIS — The New Ulm Area wrestling team picked up a pair of wins in a prep wrestling triangular on Saturday.

Going 2-0 for the Eagles (22-8) on Saturday were Parker Kamm, Logan Lee, Cole Ranweiler, Julian Hernandez and Jaden Drill. Hernandez and Drill picked up both of their wins by fall.
