Chargers pick up win over Knights

SLEEPY EYE — With two weeks left in the regular season, the Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball race got a whole lot more interesting.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran (9-3, 9-4), the third-place team in the conference, defeated first-place Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (10-2, 10-3) 89-70 in Tomahawk Conference action on Friday.

Kyreis Harrison led the Chargers with 27 points and 12 rebounds. He also had six assists. Leyton Brau hit some big 3-pointers early on and finished with 15 points. Cole Thompson scored 12 points and Christian Edwards scored 10.

MVL had lost three of its last four games prior to Friday’s game, so it was a big win moving forward for MVL.

“We worked on it this week in practice, we had some things go, Wabasso played well out there, we had to get a win here in order to still have a chance in the conference,” MVL coach Craig Morgan said. “If we gave them two losses, that gives somebody else and opportunity to maybe knock them off.”

Kaleb Wait scored 19 points and Trent Steffensmeier scored 16 for the Knights. Carson Domeier finished with 13 points and 10 assists.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Brau gave the Chargers an early 14-8 lead with 13:15 left. Domeier got the Knights to within a basket at 21-20, but the Chargers went on a run and grabbed a 34-23 lead and later a 38-24 lead on a basket by Harrison. MVL led 44-35 at the break.

St. Mary’s wasn’t able to get the lead to less than 10 points the rest of the way.

MVL is at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Monday and St. Mary’s is at New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday.
