NEW ULM — For the first half of Tuesday’s Big South Conference girls’ basketball game, it looked like New Ulm was going to hang tough with Worthington.

But the Trojans (3-1, 3-1) turned it on in the second half, turning a 28-24 halftime lead into double digits and running away with a 62-45 victory over the Eagles (2-2, 1-2).

New Ulm was led by Daviney Dreckman’s 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ramsey Hopp and Morgan Hulke each finished with 8 points off the bench.

Tarren Spartz led Worthington with 23 points.

The Trojans grabbed a 10-4 lead early on as Spartz dominated inside. Spartz scored the first 13 points for the Trojans as they led 13-6 at one point, but the Eagles were scrappy and came back, cutting the deficit to 13-11.

The Eagles tied the game at 15-15 on a basket from Bryn Nesvold and Dreckman gave them their first lead at 17-15 with 4:45 left in the first half.

Later, a 3-pointer by Hopp upped New Ulm’s lead to 22-16 as the transition game worked well for New Ulm.

A 3-pointer from Laci Boomgarden put Worthington up 23-22, but Hopp’s basket made it 24-23 in favor of the Eagles later on. Worthington took a 28-24 lead into haftime, thanks to a late basket by Spartz just before halftime.

The Trojans’ experience took over as they went on a 7-2 run to start the second half to go up 35-26 and a steal and layup later put Worthington up 41-33. They took a 45-33 lead on a basket inside from Sophie Wietzema with 11:10 to go in the second half.

New Ulm hosts Waseca on Thursday in another Big South Conference game.
