Eagles get by Belle Plaine in OT
NEW ULM — Freshman Colton Benson’s rebound basket with 20 seconds left in overtime and a Josh Wenninger free throw seven seconds later lifted the New Ulm Eagles to a 67-65 win over Belle Plaine Monday night in nonconference basketball.
Wenninger paced three Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Charlie Osborne added 17 points and James Osborne ended with 16.
Gunnar Geisler led the Tigers (2-2) with a game-high 20 points.
The Eagles, who started two freshmen in Benson and James Osborne, had taken a 37-29 lead over Belle Plaine due in large part to the play of Charlie Osborne, who scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and broke a 29-29 tie with 8 straight points to take an 8-point lead at the break.
A pair of 3s from James Osborne and a Connor Slette basket with 12 minutes left in the game moved the Eagles to a 49-44 lead.
Belle Plaine tied the contest at 49 and then grabbed a 55-51 lead before a Benson basket and a 3 from Charlie Osborne had New Ulm ahead 57-55.
But two free thows from Luke Luskey sent the game into bonus basketball, where the Eagles earned the win.
New Ulm (2-1) travels to Waseca Thursday in a Big South Conference game.
