Greyhounds take down Mustangs

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 60-46 on Tuesday in Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball action.
The Greyhounds trailed early. They then put together a 7-0 run to pull away. Neither team shot well during the first half.
BLHS kept coming back, tying it at 21-21 on a 3-point basket by Connor McColley with 2:10 left. The Greyhounds regained the lead on two free throws by Sam Knowles. Jevan Wilfahrt canned a 3 to increase their lead to 26-21. Gavin Bergsma scored for BLHS, making it 26-23 Cathedral at halftime.
Early in the second half, Cathedral led by as many as 7 points. BLHS’s McColley hit a 3-pointer and Cale Petersen scored to cut the deficit to 38-34. A few plays later, McColley dropped in a 2-point shot. Cathedral’s defense caused BLHS to miss some shots, leading the Mustangs into a scoring drought. Cathedral had a 9-0 run. Knowles had two baskets and two free throws while Alex Jensen made two free throws and Logan Haala added a free throw.
McColley scored for the Mustangs on an inside basket. Bergsma scored 4 points and Jaxon Watkins scored for BLHS’s final points.
Knowles led the Greyhounds with 22 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Jevan Wilfahrt added 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Cathedral will travel to Cedar Mountain on Thursday.
